The Sweetwater High School girls golf team won second place after firing a one-day 374 total this past Monday at the Brownwood Bluebonnet Invitational.
Sweetwaterâ€™s Alex Gomez took second place medalist honors after winning a play-off with Snyderâ€™s Faith Wil-liams and Sabrina Castillo. All three shot 87s at the end of regulation, finishing just two shots behind Kayla Johnson of Wylie.
Big Country Biggest Loser Winner is coming to the Big Country next month for those who want to boost their New Year's Resolutions and are getting ready for summer and swimsuit season locally, as well as compete for a cash prize.
The contest, sponsored by the Big Country Medical Reserve Corps, The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, Rolling Plains Rural Health Clinic, Texas State Technical College and the Sweetwater Reporter will be from March 14 to May 14 with registration dates from March 5-15.
The Morris Brothers visited Southeast Elementary School and hosted an assembly on positive classroom behavior on Friday, Feb. 16. The Morris Brothers present across the nation on topics such as bullying, character, behavior and testing. The Morris Brothers presented a positive and upbeat message on bullying in and out of school and how to handle it when it occurs. The students, faculty and staff all took part in the presentation.
The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for their regularly monthly meeting on Monday night, Feb. 27, 2012 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The meeting opened with the annual 2011 Human Resource (HR) report that was given by Gay Nell Cherry, the hospital's HR director. Reports were given on patient care providers, non-patient care providers and turnover statistics from the past year.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is a nickel more than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.Â The current statewide average is $3.57.
The national average is $3.74, increasing 13 cents more than the average last week.Â The statewide average price is 17 cents less than the national average.Â The most expensive gasoline average in the state is in Dallas at $3.59.Â Amarillo is reporting the least expensive average in the state at $3.41 for a gallon of regular unleaded.Â
Acting Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services (FFAS) Michael Scuse announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will conduct a four-week Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) general signup, beginning on March 12 and ending on April 6. CRP has a 25-year legacy of successfully protecting the nation's natural resources through voluntary participation, while providing significant economic and environmental benefits to rural communities across the United States.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 46 calls for service, issued three citations and made two arrests on Feb. 29, 2012.

Funeral services for Derrel Eugene Turnbow, 78, of Roby will be held Monday, March 5, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Roby with Rev. Bill Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be at Roby Cemetery, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 4, 2012, from 5-7 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Turnbow died Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
Manda Shed, 90, of Gatesville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012.
A graveside service for Shed was held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Toby Cemetery in Oakalla, Texas with Ernest Spiekerman and Charles McKamie officiating.
