This month Region 14 Education Service Center Head Start and others like it across the country will join together to celebrate and strengthen the nationâs awareness of the Head Start Program.
TSTC Sweetwater recently announced a series of culinary classes for the community.
"A Tour of Italy: Learn the Art of Italian Cuisineâ is a series of four classes that will take place on Monday evenings from 6-9:30 p.m. The classes will meet on Monday, Nov. 7, 14, 28 and Dec. 5 in Room 127 of the Temple Dickson building at TSTC Sweetwater. Participants can enroll in just one class or all four. Each class costs $50 and will be taught by TSTC Sweetwater chefs.
Margaret Evelyn Hiscock Adams, 86, of Abilene, Texas passed away on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at her home.
One of the basic necessities of life is water, but there are still nearly 1 billion people who have no access to sources of pure drinking water, making way for water borne illnesses to end the lives of nearly 5 million people a year.
To fix this problem sounds like a huge undertaking, but Dr. Ted Mettetal from the small town of Athens, Texas felt called to do something about it. It all started when Dr. Mettetal began going on short-term medical mission trips in the mid-1970s. âI found that everywhere you go, peopleâs biggest problem is getting clean water,â he said.
The Sweetwater City Commission met for their first meeting of the fiscal year on Tuesday morning, Oct. 11, 2011 at City Hall.
In attendance at the meeting were this year's Leadership Sweetwater participants, a civic program sponsored by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce. Jacque McCoy, executive director of the Chamber, presented the group as a whole before each member gave a personal introduction to the commission.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 51 calls for service, issued one citation and made three arrests on Oct. 12, 2011.
The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

Archie J. Hunter â Husband, daddy, papa, veteran, plowboy went to be with the Lord on Oct. 13, 2011. Archie was born May 27, 1932, to Harvid and Bertha Hunter. He graduated from Roscoe High School and attended UT Arlington on a football scholarship. He then served in the U.S. Army and played on the all Army team with Heisman Trophy winner Billy Vessels. He met and married Sherry L. Hunter while stationed at Fort Sill, OK, on Feb. 25, 1956, and loved her all his life. He then returned to college at Hardin Simmons University and was a star player for football great Coach Sammy Baugh.
Local sports fans will be treated to a double dose of Sweetwater vs. Big Spring today.
The schoolsâ volleyball teams will meet in a Dis-trict 5-3A matchup that tips off at 5 p.m. at Mustang Gym, and the football game â also a District 5-3A contest â kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Mustang Bowl.
Both Sweetwater teams need victories to keep realistic playoff hopes alive. The Sweetwater volleyball team brings a 1-3 district record into the match with four games remaining, while the football team is 0-1 in district and has three games left to play.
Several third grade students from East Ridge Elementary and fourth and fifth grade students from Sweetwater Intermediate School were treated to a special train ride on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Only 90 students were permitted to ride, as space was limited. The students were drawn for having perfect attendance for the first six weeks. Union Pacific provided the train ride.
Round two of the Big Country BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics competition is slated for Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas.
Held in the Student Center, Practice Day will allow each team a chance to practice on the actual playing field, marking it as the first time the teams get to battle their competition.
