Nolan County 4-H is currently celebrating National 4-H Month in October. During National 4-H Month, many local 4-H projects are on display at the County-City Library. The works, including photographs entered in contests, pillows and clothes from the 4-H Fashion Show and many photos, will be on display throughout the month of October. The hours for the library are Monday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WASP Marjorie Ellfeldt Rees, an extremely accomplished lady who made a positive impact inÂ the stateÂ of Kansas, died Sept. 27, 2011.
She was born August 1, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., and spent most of her life in that area, residing in Johnson County for the last 50 years. Marjorie was an only child, and she graduated from Southwest High School and the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where she also received her MA and Ph.D. in Education Psychology.Â
Carl Herman Alfred Erickson, Jr., 56, of Maryneal, died Friday, Oct. 21, 2011, in Maryneal.
No services are scheduled at this time. Mr. Erickson will be cremated.
Ralph H. Carter, 81, of Loraine, Texas passed away on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at Snyder Oakes Nursing Home in Snyder, Texas after a brief illness of pneumonia.
The Nolan County Heart Walk was held on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at the Sweetwater High School track. About 20 walkers raised a total of $4,244 for the event, bringing the grand total to $14,171 raised this year for the American Heart Association. The top four teams were Texas National Bank bringing in $1,381, Texas State Technical College bringing in $1,119, Sweetwater Healthcare Center bringing in $422 and Ludlum Measurements bringing in $375.
The proposed School Improvement Plan (SIP) was presented during the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees meeting on Monday night, Oct. 17, 2011 at the Administration Building.

Also to be auctioned is a new six-seat Polaris Ranger from Maxâ€™s Kawasaki valued at $12,500. It will be auctioned to the highest bidder. Tickets to the event are $20 and available at the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce or by calling 864-3557 or 235-9775. All proceeds will benefit the West Texas Rehab Center.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 60 calls for service, issued two citations and made three arrests on Oct. 19, 2011.
The SPD received 30, 911 calls.

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Maria M. Guerrero, 87, of Gail, Texas, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Joe Uecker officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 23, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories, recited by Connie Palacios and Pauline Gauna.
Jewel F. Campbell, age 90, of Sweetwater, Texas passed away on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 at Sweetwater Cemetery with Robert Squires officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Jewel was born Feb. 14, 1921, in Bartlett, Texas to John and Hulda (Hightower) Stone. She married C.H. Campbell on Aug. 26, 1939, in Roby, Texas. She was a Baptist. She worked as a waitress for many restaurants including Waffle Shop, and Jordanâ€™s.
