Bonten Media Groupâs KTXS-TV (ABC) and KTXE-TV (ABC) became the first television stations in the Abilene-Sweetwater and San Angelo markets to broadcast local news in high definition (HD) at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 41 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on Aug. 9, 2011.
The SPD received 35, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on Aug. 9, 2011.
Blackwell posted a sub-.500 record for the first time in three seasons a year ago, losing all three games in district play after a 4-3 start. To get back to their winning ways in 2011, theâ Hornets must rely exclusively on players with limited or no varsity experience.
Ten of the players on the roster are either freshmen or sophomores, while the other four are juniors. Five seniors who earned all-dis-trict recognition this past season have graduated.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce is now accepting nominations for those to be honored as Outstanding Young Citizen, Outstanding Female Citizen and Outstanding Male Citizen for 2011. Nominations are also being accepted for Sweetwater's Business of the Year award.
Several local fire departments assisted in a Taylor County fire on Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011 south of Trent.
Nolan County fire departments fighting the blaze included Sweetwater Fire Department, Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department, Nolan Volunteer Fire Department and Blackwell Volunteer Fire Department, along with several Taylor County fire departments and the Texas Forest Service providing a spotter plane and a task force. The Sweetwater Elks Lodge provided refreshments for the firefighters.
According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, about 350 acres of land were burned in the blaze.
The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for its regular monthly meeting on Monday morning, Aug. 8, 2011 at the Chamber of Commerce.
Two significant action items on the agenda were considered by the board, one including the renewal of the $475,000 line of credit loan for EMA. Board members browsed an informative packet while a brief presentation was made by SEED member John Jay.

Colorado City â Mr. James Larry Free, age 67, of Colorado City, passed away, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Midland Memorial Hospital in Midland, Texas. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011 at Oak Street Baptist Church in Colorado City, Texas. Rev. Jackie Brim will be officiating services. All arrangements are under the care and direction of Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
Highland has a new head football coach, Jeff Shelton, this year, and he inherits some good talent from former coach Karry Owens, who left Highland after 18 seasons and a 147-56-3 record to become the head coach at Water Valley.
Highland managed just a 2-7 record for Owens in his final year, but was practically starting over with a slew of youngsters after graduating most of the top talent from the 2009 squad that reached the state finals.
Highland holds its annual âBig Blue Previewâ Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m. at the football field. All football players and spirit groups will be introduced.
