ABILENE, Texas â€“ A project to resurface 6.4 miles of SH 70 in Nolan County south of Sweetwater has been postponed.
The work originally was scheduled to begin this week, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the contractor now anticipates a start date next week, said Mary Beth Kilgore, Abilene District public information officer.
TxDOT officials still expect the project to be finished by mid-fall, weather permitting.
Stephens-Martin Paving LP of Abilene will resurface and improve the portion of SH 70 from I-20 to almost two miles south of FM 1809.
Burnt grass is seen all around a wooden post and rain gauge at a local home during the recent Lake Sweetwater fire. The rain gauge was melted. Although Nolan County did see little rain on Saturday, July 16, it was barely measurable. Oak Creek received 0.05 inches of rain, making the total for the year 2.77 inches. Lake Trammell received no rain and it has received 1.00 inch of rain for the year. Lake Sweetwater also received no rain and has received 1.71 inches of rain for the year. The Filter Plant, Wastewater Plant and Booster B received no rain. Well Field P.S.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 142 calls for service, issued nine citations and made seven arrests from July 15-17, 2011.
The SPD received 81, 911 calls.

GARLAND â€” After giving up 15 runs in a lopsided loss to Waco Southern two days earlier, Sweetwaterâ€™s Senior League (ages 15-16) all-stars were much more competitive when the teams met again Saturday in the Texas West Section 2 championship game.
However, it still wasnâ€™t enough as Waco Southern pulled away late to claim the title with a 5-1 victory at South Garlandâ€™s Little League complex and ad-vance to the state tourna-ment in Fort Worth.
WACO â€” After three straight losses to Fort Worth University â€” two of them in last yearâ€™s 9-10 year-old sectional tournament and the other this year â€” the players on Sweetwaterâ€™s 10-11 year-old Little League team faced their nemesis again in a losers bracket final Saturday at the Texas West Section 2 tournament in Waco.
This time, the teams en-gaged in a thrilling contest that saw the teams locked in a 3-3 tie at the end of the regulation six innings.
Organizers are developing plans for a weekend concert to benefit a Snyder Police Officer who was shot in the head last week.
Organizer Jamie Crowley says she's booked the Snyder Coliseum for the weekend of August 19-21 in an effort to raise money for Darrell Campbell. Campbell has a long road to recovery ahead of him. He remains in critical condition.
Crowley is now trying to spark interest and raise funds on the social media website Facebook.
The Nolan County Board of Realtors was very excited at the number of applicants who applied for their $500 college scholarship. This scholarship was made available to all of the graduating high school seniors in Nolan County, planning to further their education. The NCBR Scholarship Committee was also very impressed with the number of applicants that were qualified to receive this award. It was a very difficult job for the selection committee.
One person entered a plea last week to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings.
John Cole Johnson pled true to a motion to adjudicate. Johnson was originally put on community supervision on June 21, 2010 for burglary of a habitation, a second degree felony. The offense occurred on May 19, 2010.
Hazel Joy Brown, age 89, of Brownwood, Texas (formerly of Sweetwater, Texas) passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Songbird Lodge Nursing Home in Brownwood.Â
