Keeping culture alive: Kids On the Land teaches ranching tradition to the next generation

Preserving the culture and traditions of Texas ranchers has been a priority for Peggy Maddox, executive director for Kids On the Land (KOL) and the focal point of the organization since Maddox and husband, Joe, started it in 2003. The Maddox's are ranchers themselves, owning a spread in Colorado City.
A non-profit organization, KOL is designed to teach schoolchildren about the ways farmers and ranch hands did things in the days before cell phones, computers and global positioning systems.

Girl Scouts present gift to KXOX

January 16, 2015

Girl Scouts from Troop #7118 made a special presentation on Friday morning to Jeff Stein, owner of KXOX AM/FM. During a reception for the radio station's 75th anniversary in November, the Girl Scouts had listeners write well wishes for the station on Post It Notes. Those notes were put together with an article about the anniversary and made into a poster.

Flu reaches epidemic levels

Just ahead of the normal height of the flu season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) already reports that the flu has already reached epidemic levels in the U.S. Helping Nolan County stay healthy, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is encouraging everyone age six months and older to get vaccinated.

School board recognizes SHS volleyball team

The Sweetwater Independent School District’s board of trustees on Tuesday recognized the Sweetwater High School volleyball team for making the Class 4A playoffs.

The Sweetwater boys bas-ketball team visits Lamesa for its District 2-4A opener today at 8 p.m., following the Sweetwater girls’ game with Lamesa that tips off at around 6:30 p.m.

Today will be sunny with a high near 63. Winds will be from the south-southwest at 10 to 15 mph.
Expect mostly clear skies tonight, with a low around 40 and southern winds at 10 to 15 mph.
This weekend, we're looking at highs in the mid to upper 60s and lows in the upper 30s which could reach 40. Winds will change from the south-southwest on Saturday night to become northern winds, shifting back to the south and southwest by Sunday.

Neil Patrick Harris will host the Academy Awards on February 22 and the list of who will be nominated for an Oscar has been announced. Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman lead the nominations list with nine each. Meryl Streep nabbed her 19th nomination, and Bradley Cooper earned his third consecutive acting nod. Four Brits were nominated this year in the Best Acting categories, Felicity Jones has been nominated along with fellow British actress Rosamund Pike and Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch.

City Commission approves SEED-sponsored coliseum sign

The Sweetwater City Commission approved a request Tuesday by Ken Becker for Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) to enter a contract with the Nolan County Coliseum Complex to construct a new sign at the intersection of Elm and Broadway.
