Print donated to Pioneer Museum

Michael Briggs has donated a painting to the Pioneer City-County Museum titled A Matter of Right-A-Way. The painting is dedicated to the ranching and railroad community of Nolan County. Briggs' family were of the founding members of ranchers in Nolan County. Three generations have remained in the railroad industry: his father, himself and one of his sons, all of which were train conductors. Michael's son, Robert E. Lee Briggs, is still working as a conductor for the BNSF railroad at Sweetwater.

Mustang Bowl to host NCAA football game

One week after hosting another successful Sammy Baugh Classic, the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and Mustang Bowl will be home to a NCAA football game. Sul Ross State University from Alpine, Texas will play Bacone University from Muskogee, Oklahoma. "This is a great opportunity to see some college football on a wonderful fall Saturday evening," said Chamber representatives.
Both teams are staying and eating in Sweetwater and kick off is slated for 5 p.m. "Come out to the Mustang Bowl and watch the Lobos and Warriors go at it as the Chamber brings the game to Sweetwater."

Expressions in Roscoe receives facelift

The Roscoe Emporium has gotten a new name and a fresh coat of paint. The store, located at the corner of W. Broadway and Cypress, is now called Expressions. The interior has been repainted, refinished and rearranged to allow for more room and more merchandise. Expressions offers a wide variety of goods and services, from recycling furniture and refinishing antiques as needed, to a large collection of handmade jewelry, hard to find items and collectibles and original, local artwork. They also offer one-of-a-kind gift items and western wear for your walls.

Statewide gas price average increases one cent

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $3.48, one penny more than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. 
The national average is $3.65, two cents more than last week.  The statewide average price is 17 cents less than the national average. The most expensive gasoline average in the state is in Amarillo at $3.58. Houston is reporting the least expensive average in the state at $3.43 for a gallon of regular unleaded. The least expensive gas in Sweetwater is $3.58 for a gallon of regular unleaded.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on Sept. 6, 2011.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

Similar name, new foe for SW

After giving a good Mon-ahans team fits at Mustang Bowl this past weekend and battling the state-ranked Loboes on even terms for three quarters before losing, Sweetwater plays a different set of Lobos this Friday.
And the spelling of their nicknames — Levelland’s Lobos, unlike Monahans, don’t include an ‘e’ in theirs — are only one of the differences between the two former Class 4A and now Class 3A schools.

Health department celebrates immunization awareness

Pictured (right) is Lilia Melendez, LVN from the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department with Gabriel Flores and his mother, Dominique Lopez. Flores was the winner of the Wii game. Everyone that received vaccines during the month of August was entered into the drawing to celebrate National Immunization Awareness Month.

Two enter guilty pleas

Two entered guilty pleas to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011.
Randy Lynn Hill pled guilty to forgery, a state jail felony.
For his plea, Hill received two years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-State Jail Division, probated for three years. He will also have to pay a $1,500 fine, $309 in court costs, $775 in restitution and $2,224 in attorney's fees. He will also have to serve 120 hours of community service and shall enter the Teen Life Challenge and successfully complete the program.

Susan King to host chamber coffee

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011 at the Sweetwater Country Club and will be hosted by State Representative Susan L. King, whose office is located at 401 Cypress, Suite 101 in Abilene.
Rep. King is currently serving her third term in the Texas Legislature. She represents Taylor and Nolan Counties and began serving the two counties in January 2007.
