Firefighters battle blaze near Lake Sweetwater

According to the Texas Forest Service, the Nolan County Complex Fire is burning southeast of Sweetwater along FM 1856; it is traveling north. An estimated 500 acres and five homes are threatened. Several Volunteer Fire Departments and Sweetwater Fire Department are battling the flames as well as air tankers and forest service ground support. This started out as two seperate fires that joined into one.

Nixon named Southeast Teacher of the Year

Amy Nixon was named the Teacher of the Year at Southeast Elementary School.
Amy Nixon is a first grade teacher at Southeast Elementary. She has taught three years at Sweetwater ISD, with a total of eight years of teaching under her belt.
Nixon attended Angelo State University from August 1999 through May 2003 and earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies and Mathematics.

USDA crop certification deadline is July 15

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, reminds producers that the annual crop certification deadline for spring-seeded crops is July 15, 2011.
Producers who file accurate and timely reports for all crops and land uses, including failed acreage can prevent the potential loss of FSA program benefits.
"I encourage all producers to visit the Nolan County FSA office to file an accurate crop certification report by the July 15 deadline in order to comply with FSA program eligibility requirements," said Cumbie

Plowboy Camp set July 18-20

A Plowboy Football Camp in Roscoe led by the Roscoe football coaching staff will be held Monday through Wednesday, July 18-20 at the Roscoe practice field.
The camp is for students entering grades 2-9 and is from 9-11:30 a.m. each day. Registration for the camp begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, July 18 at the Roscoe practice field. Pre-registration is encouraged to help with ordering camp T-shirts. The $25 cost includes a T-shirt.

Mustang Football Camp is set for July 18- July 20 at Bowl

The 2011 Mustang Foot-ball Camp has been scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, July 18-20 at Mustang Bowl.
The camp will be for students who are entering grades 4-9. The hours for this year’s camp are 6-8 p.m. each day. Registration for the camp begins at 5:40 p.m. on Monday, July 18 and no pre-registration is necessary. The cost is $30. Checks should be made payable to Mustang head football coach Craig Slaughter.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued five citations and made six arrests on July 7, 2011.

The SPD received 31, 911 calls.

• Family violence assault — 700 block of Hill.

• Female Juvenile, 14 — Family violence assault and resisting arrest.

• Meighan Elliott, 23 — Warrants.
• Frenchesca Rico, 18 — Warrant.

SISD names Teachers of the Year

Sweetwater ISD recently named their 2010-2011 Campus Teachers of the Year, along with the Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year for the district. The following are the recipients of this very high honor:

Scholarship honors longtime resident

Any students looking to apply to the University of Texas at Austin in the future may have another outlet of financial assistance for college from a local source.
Billy Roy Mathews has lived in Sweetwater his entire life and is a graduate from the Austin school. In 2010, a scholarship program was started as a tribute to Mathews to award one honor student accepted to the university a $2,000 scholarship.

Lucinda L. (Cindy) Wiltse, age 58, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. 
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2011 at Lamar Street Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Payne officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. 
Cindy was born May 14, 1953, in Albia, Iowa to John Irwin (Jack) and Georgeann Waller Lathen. She married Philip Dean Wiltse on Nov. 3, 1973, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was a homemaker.

Tracy Lee Turner, age 38, of Maryneal, Texas, and formerly Brady, passed away Friday, July 8, 2011, at her residence in Maryneal. She was born on Oct. 31, 1972, in Mason, Texas to Edward Lee Keith and Glenda Beth (Crisp) Keith. She married Charles Patrick Turner on April 15, 2000 in Menard. She was a homemaker and attended the Maryneal Baptist Church.
