Mondayâ€™s 2012 softball opener here between Sweetwater and Winters was canceled due to wet weather that made the field unplayable, according to coach Robert Williams. The Lady Mus-tangs will now begin their season at Abileneâ€™s three-day tournament that begins Thursday.
Highlandâ€™s girls hoped to begin their 11th straight trip to the basketball playoffs with a win, but instead lost to Sterling City 44-36 in the teamsâ€™ bi-district contest on Monday.
By winning the Class 1A, Div. II playoff in Winters, Sterling City advances to the area round while High-landâ€™s season ends with a 22-9 record.
Highland, the second-place team in District 11-A, Division II this season, won 20 or more games for the eighth time in 11 years.
The Sweetwater boys golf team fired a 312 on Friday to tie Wylie for first place and ended up with the title after winning a tiebreaker at Big Springâ€™s tournament.
Alex Castillo led the way as he shot a 75 to tie for second among medalists, while Mason Andrews tied for ninth with a 77. Dylan Torres shot 79, Ryan Mer-cer 81 and Guy Bond 86. The event was shortened to 18 holes due to weather.
The Sweetwater girls golf team shot a 379 on Friday to place fourth at Big Spring. Snyder (366) won the title with Wylie (374) second and Andrews (375) third.
Sweetwater Emergency Services responded to a wreck on Thursday evening, Feb. 9, 2012, north of Roscoe.Â A student fell asleep and rolled into the culvert.
"She was banged up but not seriously injured," said Sweetwater Emergency Services Director Grant Madden. "We did not transport her to the hospital," he added.
The Nolan County West Texas Groundwater Conservation District is offering "water smart tips" for water efficiency in and around the home.
The Texas State Water Plan, from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB), projects that by 2050, the state's population will increase by 90%, bringing total municipal water demand to increase by 67%.
And even though water savings projected by conservation will stand at 13.5% by that time, only 75% of the projected water demand will meet the water supply from existing sources.
Last Saturday Sweetwater High School Band member Crysten Ivy gave the performance of a lifetime, performing with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio. The concert was witnessed by an enthusiastic audience of several thousand music educators, family members and supporters. It was the culmination of the annual Texas Music Educators Convention, which involves more than 10,000 elementary music teachers and band, choir and orchestra directors.
Two college students are lucky to be alive after icy roads caused a major accident near Sweetwater on Interstate 20, according to KTXS.
The students were heading to Lubbock when the driver hit a patch of ice causing her to lose control.
Her mustang hit the concrete median, ricocheted off and slid under an 18-wheeler.
Sweetwater emergency service personnel responded to the wreck. The passenger had to be pulled out of the vehicle through the window.
Alice K. Sanders, age 64, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, in Odessa, TX. She was born May 9, 1947, in Oceanside, Calif. to Walter B. and Annabell (Whitney) Boen.
Alice was a member of the Church of God in Kermit, TX and liked going on church retreats.Â She liked talking on the phone and keeping up with the family.Â She loved being a grandma, and was known as â€śGranny Aliceâ€ť to her grandkids.
It took a tiebreaker this past season to keep Sweet-waterâ€™s softball team from getting a shot at the pro-gramâ€™s first playoff berth since the 1990s.
However, that hurdle may be cleared in 2012 with 11 returning lettermen â€” five of whom won all-district recognition â€” on this seasonâ€™s 13-player roster. Still, the team will be young with only three seniors, along with eight juniors and two freshmen.
First-year coach Robert Williams is excited about that potential as the Lady Mustangs prepare for their season opener at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Winters.
