The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 124 calls for service, issued three citations and made six arrests from Dec. 2-4, 2011.

Pete Ortega, Jr. passed on Sept. 13, 2011, in Oklahoma City. The burial was held Monday, Dec. 5, 2011.
He is the grandson of Margarito and Socorro Gutierrez; son of Rebecca G. Castillo and step father Ruben Castillo. He had three brothers, Tony, David and Jose; two sisters, Margarita and Becky; several nieces and nephews; his daughter, Rebecca from Mexico; one aunt, Rachel Cuellar, three uncles, Tuto, Alfredo and Quie Gutierrez; and cousins from Sweetwater.
Nolan Countyâ€™s eight area high school varsity basket-ball teams are all at home today when they resume play after participating in weekend tournaments that wrapped up on Saturday at various locations.
Sweetwater hosts Merkel in a doubleheader, starting with the girls game at 6:30 followed by the boys at 8 p.m. JV games will be played in both gyms at 5 p.m., with a freshman boys game at 6:30 and freshman girls game at 8. Also, both Roscoe teams host Baird; Highlandâ€™s teams entertain Albany; and the Blackwell girls and boys host Trent.

Both of the Sweetwater junior varsity basketball teams captured tournament championships Saturday.
The JV boys (8-1) won all four games at Jayton as they defeated Forsan 38-29, routed Breckenridgeâ€™s freshman team 42-10, edged the Colorado City JV 20-18 in an overtime semifinal and defeated Breckenridgeâ€™s JV 39-30 in the title game.
The freshman boys (3-2) also played at Jayton but lost both of their games, falling to Colorado City 33-29 and to Crosbyton 44-43.
Wintry weather is now upon us this first week of December with snowfall continuing from Sunday night, Dec. 4, 2011. Snowfall continued on Monday morning and is expected to continue the rest of the day with a slight mix of rain expected in the afternoon. The Sweetwater Choral Department is hosting a Dessert Concert Fundraiser in the Sweetwater High School Cafeteria on Monday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. This concert will feature students from the SMS Choirs, along with Choir Soloists, and the SHS Pops Sensations. Tickets are $10 a person. Proceeds to benefit the SISD Choral Department's Festival Trips and New Sound Equipment.
Ken Becker accepts a toy from Jacob and Jordan Blain at the annual Goodfellows toy drive held on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, at Wal-Mart. A total of 287 toys were donated and $699.90 was raised at the drive, bringing the current total raised to $3,784.90.
Representative Susan L. King and Taylor Electric Cooperative will host a legislative forum on Thursday, Dec. 8 at the Texas Forest Service Offices located at 1610 North 1st Street in Merkel, TX.
Representative King will open the forum at 10 a.m. with a short presentation welcoming her constituents, which will be followed by an open discussion with opportunities for questions and answers.Â
Town halls are being held in various locations throughout District 71 to allow greater access for those who are interested in meeting with Rep. King.
