Four Nolan County high school seniors have received scholarships in the amount of $1,200 each for the upcoming school year through the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) Nursing Scholarship Fund. The fund, established three years ago, has provided thousands of dollars to local students to help them achieve higher education in the field of healthcare.
Three scholarship recipients are from Sweetwater High School and include Cassandra Diaz, Christian Richardson and Genea Cherry. Roscoe High School senior Melanie Diaz also received an award.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 139 calls for service, issued four citations and made three arrests from June 17-19, 2011.
The SPD received 146, 911 calls.

Funeral services for Fleta Mae Waldrop, age 93 of Seminole, Texas will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Pastor Matt Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Gaines County Memorial Cemetery (north). All services are under the direction of Boyer Funeral Home.
Mrs. Waldrop passed away Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Memorial Health Care Center in Seminole, Texas following a lengthy illness. She was born June 10, 1918 in Enid, Oklahoma to Benjamin Freeman and Ether Ethyl (Johnson). She married Levi T. Waldrop on August 15, 1936 in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Sweetwater will be hosting a Black Gold Tennis Circuit Challenger event Friday and Saturday, June 24-25. The entry fee will be $25 and the entry deadline is Wednesday, June 22.
A local family lost their home and its entire contents to a fire on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 1401 Avondale. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is thought to have originated in the family's carport, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. The blaze was contained due to the efforts of many firefighters and local law enforcement officials assisting.
During the City Commission meeting at City Hall on Tuesday morning, June 14, a special, joint session was held between the City Commission and Nolan County Commissioners on the possibilities of constructing a new law enforcement center.
No public input was allowed, but residents who were in attendance for the city meeting were invited to sit in on the talks among the local officials.
Due to the dry conditions and recent surge in wildfires, the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) is in need of assistance.
The Ladies Auxiliary of the Roscoe VFD is now establishing a drive to restock the firefighters' Recovery Supplies Program. "All items are greatly appreciated in this time of need," said drive organizers.
Items needed include all flavors of Gatorade, Chap-Stick, wipes, Visine eye drops, sunscreen and hand sanitizer. Drop off sites for the items are located at the Sweetwater Wal-Mart and Roscoe City Hall.
Seven Roscoe Collegiate High School students received the "Texas Student Achievement Award" from the Texas ACT Council for their performance on the PLAN (Pre-ACT) Assessment. These students are on target to meet or exceed ACT's College Readiness Benchmarks by graduation. ACT's College Readiness Benchmarks are empirically-based and identify the level of achievement necessary in English, mathematics, reading and science to have a successful college freshman experience.
Barbara Jean "Bobbie" Rainwater, 71, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, June 19, 2011, in a local hospital. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 20, 2011, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Thurmon (T.D.) Cain, 93, of Lawrenceburg, KY and Argyle, TX, died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at his residence. He was born Jan. 20, 1918, in Cooper, TX, son of the late Percy B. and Alice Gertrude Wallace Cain. He was a retired Santa Fe Railroad employee and served in the Army Air Forces during WWII.
