Former resident named manager of SWTMG

A former Big Country resident is making huge strides at his Big Bend occupation.
Randy Guzman, the son of Jose and Gloria Guzman of Roscoe, was recently named as the interim general manager of Southwest Texas Municipal Gas (SWTMG) Corporation by the company's board of directors.

Rotary Club to go hungry

Two Rotary International programs will be the topics of discussion at the Sweetwater Rotary Club meeting to be held on Monday, Feb. 28. The noon-time meeting will be held at the TSTC West Texas Sweetwater campus in the banquet room located north of the cafeteria.
Jack Campbell will be the guest speaker and will discuss the Rotary Youth Exchange. Campbell currently serves as the Rotary District 5730 Chairman of the Rotary Youth Exchange program.

Hastings, more changes than just the interior

Hastings Entertainment in Sweetwater has not only made some changes on the inside — they have some great events arriving visually for the readers and musically for those music listeners.
Speaking with Thomas Jowers, manager of the Hastings located at 1102 E. Broadway, he has arrived to the Sweetwater Hastings with many new ideas. He welcomes local artists of all kinds. Jowers wants to get all of the community involved with Hastings events. From children's Easter egg hunts, to cartoon character events, and much more for families and adults.

Double medal winner

Jayci Shelton, a senior at Sweetwater High School, won medals in two events recently at an indoor invitational track meet held at Texas Tech University. She ran the 55-meter hurdles in 8.97 seconds for a first-place finish out of a field of 52 competitors — some from Class 5A — with seven heats. In addition, Shelton was third in the 400 meters out of a field of 150 girls with a time of 1:01.57. The latter race had 25 heats and also included runners from Class 5A schools.

SHS tennis team plays at Levelland

The Sweetwater High School tennis team recently had several top individual finishes when it competed at an invitational tournament in Levelland.
In boys singles, Chris Hernandez took third place while Michael Foust won consolation honors. Austin Cotherman and Brandon Ellison teamed up to finish third in boys doubles. On the girls side, Heidi Taylor was fifth in singles while the pairing of Jenny Ordway and Dugan Thompson teamed up for a second-place finish in girls doubles.

Girls lifters are 2nd at SW meet

The Sweetwater girls, serving as the host team, had two individual winners at their powerlifting meet held Saturday and also had a second-place team finish.
Kelsey Painter (670 total pounds) won the 132-pound class while Allie Zavaleta (595 pounds) won the 123-pound class for Sweetwater, which scored 32 points to finish behind only Abilene’s 42. Sixteen schools were represented in the meet.

Three SHS girls compete at Tech indoor track meet

Three members of the Sweetwater High School girls track team began their 2011 season by competing recently at an indoor invitational meet at Texas Tech University.
Jayci Shelton started out her senior year with a bang by collecting two medals at the meet. Shelton won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.97 seconds in a field of 52 girls. Shelton also placed third — out of 150 competitors — in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.57.

Fire burns 1300 acres

February 25, 2011

A Thursday afternoon fire consumed 1300 acres just West of Blackwell according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. Madden stated that the fire began on County Road 265 on Diamond Plate Ranch. The fire is thought to have been started by a lit cigarette being thrown on the road. Several homes were threatened by the fire, but were all saved. It took several entities from 2-10 p.m. to contain the blaze.

Residents asked to be cautious during fire season

Drought conditions, high winds and low humidity are prompting Texas Forest Service officials to predict a high risk for wildfire on Sunday, Feb. 27, in the Big Country.
The combination of ongoing drought, gusty winds and low humidity creates the potential for large and threatening wildfires. Texans should use caution and refrain from outdoor burning or other activities that could start a wildfire. No outdoor burning is authorized under the current burn bans issued by county officials.
