Sweetwater falls to Wylie in tournament semifinals

After storming past their first two opponents, the Sweetwater 10-11 year-old all-stars looked to be on their way to another convincing win on Friday when they led 4-1 after the first 1 1/2 innings against Wylie. But one dramatic hit — a grand slam homer by Wylie’s Conner Carlton — changed all that as the visitors rallied to defeat Sweetwater, 8-6, in their District 5 semifinal at Sweetwater’s Major League field that sent Wylie to Monday’s title game.

Two SW teams are eliminated

Sweetwater’s 9-10 and 13-14 (Junior League) all-star teams were eliminated Friday from their respective District 5 tournaments after losing for the second time, leaving the 10-11 year-0ld team as the lone survivor.
On Thursday, the 11-12 year-olds were eliminated after losing to Snyder 13-3.

Senior Leaguers going to sectionals

A baseball team made up of 15- and 16-year-olds will be representing Sweetwater at a Texas West Section II Senior League tournament.
The 2011 tournament is set for July 13-16 in Garland and will include teams who represent four sections of the state. Sweetwater, which represents District 5, will be joined by teams from Dis-trict 7 (Fort Worth area), District 8 (Dallas area) and District 9 (Waco area).
The tournament will be hosted by South Garland Little League. Sweetwater will play its first game at 6 p.m. July 13 against the District 8 representative.

FOIA documents reveal Stamford in closed door negotiations over coal plant water demand

Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) documents reveal that representatives of the City of Stamford have been negotiating behind closed doors since 2009 with the proposed Tenaska coal plant over what is likely thousands of acre feet per year of Stamford water. Stamford, along with about 94 percent of Texas was in a state of severe, extreme or exceptional drought as of June 7, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor and drought conditions are not expected to subside in the near future.

AgriLife Extension drought/fire program looks at alternatives

SWEETWATER – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service offices in Nolan and Fisher counties will conduct a program for cattle producers hit by drought and fire from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 6 at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex in Sweetwater. 
“It’s been a tough year with no end in sight,” said Zachary Wilcox, AgriLife Extension agent in Nolan County. “Many of our producers have had a double-whammy due to the ongoing dry weather coupled with the huge wildfires we’ve been having.

Texas House of Representatives passes HR 295 honoring TSTC

OCLA donates to local VFDs

The Oak Creek Lake Association (OCLA) announced contributions of $1,000 to the Volunteer Fire Departments (VFD) of Blackwell and Bronte as well as $1,000 to each Emergency Medical Services (EMS) of Bronte and Blackwell for a total of $4,000 contributed.
The City of Sweetwater owns Oak Creek Lake and surrounding property (with few exceptions) and leases lake lots to individuals. The lake is the major source of drinking water to the city of Sweetwater. The lessees pay taxes in Coke County and some lake lots pay Blackwell ISD taxes.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office is asking for your help in solving a crime that occurred at the Sweetwater Country Club. Sometime between 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 2011, and 10 a.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011, unknown person(s) caused damage to several golf carts and also caused damage to one of the greens on the golf course.
Crime Stoppers will pay a cash reward for information received this week that leads to an arrest or indictment in this case.

RPMH salutes hometown heroes

Employees of Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital recently donated bottled water to assist local firefighters and volunteers. Movie day fun at Kids Kampus

The students at Kids Kampus school-age center had the chance to take a fun field trip on Friday to the Texas Theater. The students watched an animated movie and also received a personal popcorn and drink to enjoy the movie.
