Southeast PTO looking out for students

The PTO at Southeast has starred again. With fundraising profits, the PTO made it possible for the students of Southeast Elementary to have a covered walkway into the building which will help protect them in inclement weather. Johnson crowned Yucca Queen

Sweetwater High School junior Carly Johnson was crowned and named Yucca Queen on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at the Sweetwater High School Auditorium. She is the daughter of Craig and Nancy Johnson. She is shown with her escort, Sam Nemir.

Quail Masters 2011 dates set

ROBY - The dates of this year's four QuailMasters 2011 quail management workshops that focus on bobwhite and scaled quail have been set, according to a Texas AgriLife Extension Service specialist.
The workshops will be coordinated by Dr. Dale Rollins, San Angelo-based AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist. Rollins will also be the instructor for the series along with Karla Welch, an educational consultant with the Texas Wildlife Association. Rollins said participants are expected to attend all four of the three-day workshops which begin in April and run through October.

Strong families the focus of new program

Children's Connections Inc., strengthening families parenting program, has received funding to expand their operations to Sweetwater. The program is funded by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Prevention and Early Intervention Division. Through this extra funding, they are able to serve 10 Texas counties; Fisher, Nolan, Mitchell, Coke, Tom Green, Concho, Garza, Lubbock, Terry and Midland County.

Bowden, Massey perform at JavaJax

JavaJax coffee bar in Sweetwater brought in two acts on Saturday evening. Performing together were Will T. Massey and fiddler Richard Bowden. This was their first visit to JavaJax. Bowden did not grow up in West Texas. He moved to Lubbock in the 1970s and spent over 10 years in the Lubbock music scene. Bowden played approximately 10 years with the The Main Brothers Band in Lubbock as the fiddler and mandolin player in the group.

Vernon R. “Cotton” Allen

ROBY — Vernon R. “Cotton” Allen, 80, former resident of Fisher County now of Snyder, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, at Mitchell County Hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Roby. Burial will follow at Roby Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held Saturday from 5-6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Roscoe boys are hoping to prolong season

The girls regular season is over and the high school basketball playoffs are almost here. But so far, only one Nolan County team has secured a postseason berth. However, the Roscoe boys can join the Highland girls in the playoffs with a win tonight at Munday. Roscoe and Munday are currently tied for third place in District 9-A, Division I with 5-4 records. Tonight’s winner advances to the postseason. The game will end the regular season for both squads. In the first meeting between the teams, Roscoe won 54-46.

Highland girls are playoff-bound again

The Highland girls basketball team is in the Class 1A playoffs for the 10th straight year and has a warmup game at Stamford at 8 p.m. today. Highland will begin the playoffs at 7 p.m. Tuesday with a bi-district game against Robert Lee in Bronte. Highland finished as the runnerup in District 11-A, Division II with a 10-2 record and is 19-10 overall.

RPMH offers free cholesterol screening

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th, on Thursday, Feb. 17, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening. There will be pamphlets and information available on cholesterol.
SNCHD will be closed on Monday, Feb. 21, for President’s Day.
Immunization clinics are held every Wednesday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4:30 p.m. and the second Wednesday of each month until 6 p.m.
