Sweetwater’s Poe is a double winner; Herrera guides North to victory

Five ex-Sweetwater High athletes and a current coach returned to the diamond this past weekend. For the athletes, it was a chance to end their high school careers by playing in summer all-star games.

SHS graduate wins scholarship from statewide police group

Angellica M. Collier, a recent graduate of Sweetwater High School is among the winners of the 2015 Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation Scholarship.
Angellica’s mother, Angie Collier, works for the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office. Angellica has been accepted into West Texas A&M University and plans to major in nursing.

Weeds becoming a major issue in the city

At last week's City Commission meeting, City Manager Eddie Brown noted that weeds have become a major issue with Code Enforcement and Public Works as a result of the rains that fell last month.

RSB hosts informative luncheon on "chip cards"

Roscoe State Bank held a luncheon last week to inform area retail owners about an upcoming change in the world of finance that will have an impact on how business is conducted.

McGee leads North to win

June 15, 2015

ABILENE — Two enor-mous second-half plays — one on offense and one on defense — by ex-Sweetwater High star Isaiah McGee led the North all-star football team to a 21-3 win over the South on Saturday night at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Myrle Greathouse All-Star Classic.

VIDEO: World's first 'Comic-Con for cat people' takes LA by storm

Thousands of people turned out for the very first edition of CatCon Los Angeles. Attendees donned cat ears, lined up to shake paws with celebrity felines, and fawned over cat-centric arts, crafts and products.

WASP Museum receives $3,500 grant from Operation Round-Up

The National WASP (Women AirForce Service Pilots) WWII Museum recently obtained a $3,500 grant from Operation Round-Up, which is part of Big Country Electric Cooperative (BCEC).
Established in December 2014, Operation Round-Up allows the members of BCEC--which are also its owners--the opportunity to "round up" their electric bill to the nearest dollar amount. The money collected from the initiative is placed into a fund that assists organizations with charitable purposes within BCEC's service base.

Sweetwater to celebrate Independence Day with Lakefest, Jam at the Dam

By popular demand, a fireworks show in Sweetwater will return this year to celebrate the birth of America.
At Tuesday's City Commission meeting, approval was given to allow the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce to sponsor a fireworks display at the Lake Sweetwater dam on Friday, July 3, 2015, which will start at 9:30 p.m.
