Today, January 9, Team Chip TKD will hold a free Anti-Bully Seminar for kids ages 5-11 from 7-8:30 p.m. at 2015 Lamar Suite C, Sweetwater.
This is a school-wide event across two states and five schools. Anyone with questions may can call (325) 933-4239.
On Saturday, January 10, the "Just Keep Swimming" concert fighting cancer featuring Jerrod Medulla will be held at the Sweetwater Jaycee Barn at 307 W. 4th Street from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. Doors open at 8 p.m.
There is a cover charge (BYOB-no cooler charge). Proceeds will benefit Julie Sawyers.

Today, we'll have a 20% chance of freezing rain and sleet before noon. Otherwise it will be mostly cloudy and cold, with a high near 31 and winds from the north-northeast at 10 to 15 mph. Gusts could get as high as 25 mph, with wind chill values between 12 and 22.
Expect mostly cloudy skies tonight, with a low around 21 and north-northeast winds at 5 to 10 mph. After midnight, winds will shift to the south-southeast.

One arrest made in Sunday morning shooting

Sweetwater police officers responded early Sunday morning to a family dispute at the 1200 block of Avondale Boulevard, where they found one man with a gun shot wound to the foot.

West Texas Energy Consortium receives Industry Sector Outreach Award

At a recent regularly scheduled Workforce Solutions Board meeting, the West Texas Energy Consortium was honored for their commitment to workforce development by developing and implementing strategies to address labor shortages, employer training needs and employee retention in competing sectors.

Community Captains host local toy drive

January 8, 2015

The Community Captains hosted a toy drive at the local K-Mart. With the generous donations from the community, they were able to provide a family of eight with a Christmas and toys for the local CPS office.

Sweetwater 7th and 8th grade ‘A’ girls will play at Clyde tournament through Saturday, Jan. 10.
All other Sweetwater middle school teams have an open date this week.
Roscoe junior high boys will host Hamlin starting at 5 p.m.
Roscoe junior high girls will play at Hamlin starting at 5 p.m.
Blackwell junior high teams will host Bronte star-ting at 6 p.m.
FRIDAY, JAN. 9
District openers: Sweet-water girls will host Snyder — JV at 5 p.m., varsity at 6:30 p.m.
Sweetwater boys will play at Monahans — freshmen and JV at 5 p.m., varsity at 6:30 p.m.

Tipoff is moved up for SW girls’ district opener

Because of the possibility of icy road conditions this weekend, the starting time for the Sweetwater varsity girls District 2-4A basketball opener against Snyder — originally set for 6:30 p.m. at Sweetwater’s Mustang Gym — has been moved to 5 p.m. The varsity game will be followed by a junior varsity girls contest between Sweetwater and Snyder if weather permits, said Sweetwater athletic director Shane Mobley.

Plowgirls and Lady Hornets get first district wins

Roscoe and Blackwell got their first district wins in area girls basketball action on Tuesday.

Today, January 8, Story Hour at the County-City Library for parents and their children will be at 10:45 a.m.
Library staff will lead the parents and children in stories and songs. Call 235-4978 for more information or go to www.sweetwaterlibrary.org.
Also, the Rolling Plains Unit of Retired School Personnel’s monthly meeting will be held at the Country Club.
Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. and a short business meeting will follow. All retired school personnel are invited to attend.
