Daniel G. Martinez, Sr., age 74, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 at Hendrick Medical Center.Â
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Johnny Deleon officiating.Â Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery.Â Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.Â
Daniel was born on May 21, 1937 in Eskota, Texas to Pascual and Felipa (Gomez) Martinez.Â He worked as a cement pipe manufacturer for Gifford-Hill-American before retiring.Â
Ryan Linebaugh has been named as Sweetwaterâ€™s Football Player of the Week. Linebaugh, a 5-9, 165-pound junior who starts at running back and linebacker, was the Mustangsâ€™ leading rusher and tackler this past week against Levelland in a 27-8 victory. On defense he had nine solo tackles, three for a loss, plus six assisted tackles, one sack, one quarterback knockdown, one big hit and one defensed pass. On offense, Linebaugh rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns, including a 34-yard clinching TD with 6:43 remaining.

Highland (1-2) won its first game of the season this past Friday by defeating Novice, 70-52.
The Sweetwater Middle School seventh grade Red team was the only winner in season-opening football action this past Thursday as it defeated Levelland 36-0.
Jacoby Hunt ran for five touchdowns in the victory. His TD runs went for 14, 48, 28, 4 and 70 yards. In addition, Hunt had a 63-yard run to Levellandâ€™s 14-yard line to set up his first TD. Jordan McGee had a pair of two-point conversion runs and Daniel Olguin one.
Blackwell defeated Lueders-Avoca, 38-21, in its junior high football season opener this past Thursday.

An earthquake rattled portions of the Big Country early Sunday waking some people up a little earlier than they expected.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports a magnitude 4.4 earthquake shook the ground about 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Its epicenter was 11 miles northeast of Snyder. The 4.4 magnitude makes it the largest earthquake to occur in the Big Country in the last few years.
According to the USGS, people report feeling the earthquake from as far away as Irving, San Angelo, and Lubbock.
In honor of Grandparentâ€™s Day on Sunday, Sept. 11, the following Sweetwater ISD campuses are inviting grandparents to eat lunch on the following days.
East Ridge Elementary will host grandparents on Tuesday, Sept. 13. On Wednesday, Sept. 14, Sweetwater Intermediate will be open to grandparents.
The Kindergarten classes at Southeast Elementary will have grandparents to lunch on Thursday, Sept. 15, while the Southeast First Grade students and J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center campuses will be open on Friday, Sept. 16.
The 2011-2012 Leadership Sweetwater class will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The class will start the year with orientation at TSTC. Orientation will be facilitated by Melissa Howard.
Leadership Sweetwater is a nine-month course that educates the students about the inner workings and sometimes little-known facts about Sweetwater and the region. Each month the class will attend a different session. The course ends in May with a graduation ceremony and meal. The program is sponsored by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
