Texas Theatre celebrates 75th anniversary

Seventy-five years ago the Sweetwater Texas Theatre opened its doors for showings of first-run movies and live entertainment. Two years ago people from all around the area started pitching in and working hard to clean, renovate and restore the venue to operable condition. Last week the final connections were made to get the new heating and air conditioning units installed and working in the Texas 2.

Funeral services for Terry Lee Lane, 47, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Evangelical Methodist Church with Rev. William Mayo and Wayne Lisenbee officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A visitation will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Lane died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.

SW plays Merkel closer, but still loses first-round games

Two days after suffering lopsided defeats at Merkel, Sweetwater’s boys and girls basketball teams got first-round rematches Thursday at the Stanton tournament and this time, both of the games were much closer.
But Merkel still won the boys game, 45-43, in overtime and also defeated the Sweetwater girls 35-30.The Mustangs (4-5) were to play either Tahoka or Midland Classical at 3 p.m. today, while the Lady Mustangs (6-8) faced Midland Chris-tian this morning in their consolation semifinal.

Sierra Club warns of Tenaska’s water usage

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, the Sierra Club held a noon-time press conference in Abilene on the steps of City Hall.
A report was released by the Sierra Club entitled, "What Would You Drink if the Well Ran Dry? — Nolan County Water and the Proposed Tenaska Coal-Fired Power Plant". Dr. Lauren Ross from Glenrose Engineering, Inc. presented the report alongside Dr. Jeff Haseltine and Whitney Root, Abilenians Against Tenaska; Jimmy Headstream, Multi-County Coalition; and Peter Wilson, Sierra Club.

Tenaska helps fund Backpack Buddies

More low-income children in the Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) will have food on weekends during this school year, thanks to a generous donation from Tenaska, developer of the Trailblazer Energy Center, a $3.5 billion carbon capturing power plant proposed near Sweetwater.
Tenaska is donating $2,000 to expand the Sweetwater Backpack Buddies program, a non-profit volunteer agency that provides food to children identified as chronically hungry by the SISD staff and administration, announced Leah Andrews, the program’s Sweetwater coordinator.

Santa Claus is coming to town

Kamdyn Dane drops off a letter to Santa at the Sweetwater Reporter. Letters are due at the Sweetwater Reporter by Friday, Dec. 10, to make it in time to be mailed to the North Pole. The letters will be included in the special “Letters to Santa” section on Friday, Dec. 24.

Bahlman Cleaners launches sixth Coats for Kids

Since 2004, Bahlman Cleaners has collected approximately 1,200 gently worn winter garments for men, women and children who otherwise would be without one, according to owner Janice Pridemore. Bahlman's mission is simple: anyone in the region in need of a coats shall receive one in possible.

Amalio Deanda

A graveside service for Amalio Deanda, 63, of Roscoe, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, at Roscoe Cemetery with Father Michael Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Deanda died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, in Abilene.

SMS girls win consolation at Big Spring tourney

The Sweetwater Middle School seventh grade girls White team (shown) and eighth grade girls White team show off their hardware at the recent Big Spring tournament. Both of the SMS basketball teams finished as the consolation champions in their respective brackets at the three-day tournament, which ended this past Saturday.

B’well, Roscoe boys get Ws but two fall in OT

Two area basketball teams, the Roscoe and Blackwell boys, won on Tuesday night.
Roscoe’s boys (3-2) won at Baird 55-32 for their third consecutive victory after an 0-2 start, while the Blackwell boys (4-6) beat Trent 66-51 in their game.
But in girls action on Tuesday, Roscoe and Highland both lost heartbreaking games that went to overtime. Roscoe (4-5) fell to Baird 29-25, while Highland (4-6) lost to Albany 38-34.
Albany also won the boys game by defeating Highland 59-26.
