Mustangs seek further improvement vs. L-View

Sweetwater showed noticeable improvement in last week’s opening scrimmage at Lubbock Cooper when compared to the previous year’s result, battling the Pirates to a 1-1 standoff, but the team’s No. 1 offense was unable to score points.
Coach Craig Slaughter is hoping for a breakthrough in that area when the Mus-tangs host San Angelo Lake View tonight in their final scrimmage. The JV White and Red squads both scrimmage at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.

Senator Duncan visits Sweetwater

Texas Senator Robert Duncan met with local community leaders on Thursday morning, Aug. 18, 2011 for a Roundtable Discussion hosted by the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas. The meeting took place at the campus in the President's Board Room in the Sears Building.
The Senator not only offered some oversight into the 82nd Legislative Session but also allowed for the audience to discuss important matters that impact the community.

City, county join to beautify museum

The City of Sweetwater and Nolan County have combined forces to keep the Pioneer Museum looking its best. The two entities have agreed to work together to work on upkeep for the County-City Museum. Shown is city employee Jamie Allred keeping the sidewalk clean. City employees Randy Teel, Ramiro Betancourt and Angel Garcia helped clear brush from the Museum's front lawn. Also working that day was Casey Wooten.

Welcome Home event planned

The West Texas VA Health Care System is hosting a welcome home event to honor veterans who have served in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the historic Fort Concho in San Angelo.

Isabel Mendez Luevanos

Holy Mass of Christian Burial services for Isabel Mendez Luevanos, 67, of Roscoe, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with Father Michael Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A rosary will be recited by Pauline Gauna and Connie Palacios at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories.
Luevanos died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011, at her residence in Roscoe.

SISD unveils action plan towards higher ratings

An action plan was unveiled to begin the trek toward higher ratings at the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees meeting on Monday evening, Aug. 15, 2011 at the Administration Building, following the ratings announcement from the TEA (Texas Education Agency which brought the five main campuses within the district — and SISD itself — down one category from the previous year.

Sweetwater Tejano artist Anjelique nominated for Best New Female Artist

Zeravla Entertainment is announcing that Rokko Records' newest recording artist, Anjelique, has been nominated for Best New Female Artist at the 31st Annual Tejano Music Awards.
Since the age of 15, Anjelique has been representing West Texas as a female artist. Finally, after many years she has been awarded with this nomination.
In December of 2010, Anjelique re-released her debut album, "Regresa A Mi", with two original bonus tracks. She was voted as one of the Top 12 by the Tejano Music Industry.

TSTC to host Community Connections Fair

All businesses are invited to participate in the TSTC Sweetwater Community Connections Fair again this fall on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is an opportunity for new and returning students and their families to meet local businesses and organizations and get to know what services are offered. "We think this is a fun and informative opportunity for our students," said Jeff Howard, Associate Vice President of Student Development at Texas State Technical College West Texas.
