Texas Theatre open this weekend

Marcus and Bea Monroe, along with the M3 Palace Theater in Colorado City, are pleased to announce that the Texas Theatre II in Sweetwater is finally up and running. With the recent installation of air conditioning and heating, the Texas Theater is now open and showing movies, starting this Friday.
This weekend's shows include "Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole" and "Paranormal Activity 2." The films will run throughout the weekend from Friday, Nov. 26 through Sunday Nov. 28.

Parks being winterized

As of Nov. 24, 2010, The City of Sweetwater Public Works Department will be winterizing all Parks, Sweetwater Cemetery and Lake Sweetwater campground restrooms by turning off the water to these facilities for the remainder of the cold season. For information concerning the use of park facilities, please contact the Sweetwater City Service Center at 325-235-1297 or 325-235-5003.

Black Friday a yearly event

It's that time again. Time to wake up early, wait in line and see what Black Friday deals you can get.
Black Friday has been a yearly event, since the 1960s, but hasn't always meant what it means now. In the beginning, Black Friday was coined to describe the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Once retailers noticed that they could entice customers to their stores with major sales, the shopping extravaganza began.

The evolution of Thanksgiving

For anyone who's an avid viewer of the annual Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special, you might have an idea about how the first Thanksgiving celebration came about. Linus Van Pelt recalled the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621 with Indian chief Massasoit, Governor William Bradford and Captain Miles Standish. But, for the history buff, there was one Thanksgiving celebration that was held before.

Courthouse to undergo landscaping work

The weather may be getting colder, but the moisture doesn't seem to be coming just yet. The area is still dry and the burn ban was left on at the regular Nolan County Commissioner's meeting on Monday, at least for the time being.
The topic of electricity was a hot one. Two presentations on possible ways to lower electricity costs were heard at the meeting; Bob Forman presented for Priority Power Management Company and Lee Washington also presented.

Angel Tree set up at Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart has partnered with West Texas Children's Advocacy Center to provide a way for many children in the area to have a better Christmas. Angels on a Christmas tree at Wal-Mart represent children who have been served by the WTCAC this year. Each angel has a child's gender, ages, sizes and special needs or a favorite toy of character that the child would like.

East Ridge collects over 2,000 food items

East Ridge Elementary School collected over 2,000 items for their Fill the Boot Food Drive in November. Mrs. Brennan’s first grade class collected 435 items. They earned a popcorn party. East Ridge would like to thank all of the parents, students and staff for all their help.

TEA announces district awards

Texas Education Agency recently announced its 2010 District Gold Performance Acknowledgement Awards. The awards are as follows:
• Sweetwater ISD: (1) Recognized District; Social Studies-Commended Performance
• Sweetwater High School: (1) Academically Acceptable Campus; Social Studies-Commended Performance
• Sweetwater Middle School: (2) Recognized Campus; Writing-Commended Performance; Social Studies-Commended Performance
• East Ridge Elementary: (2) Exemplary Campus; Reading/English Language Arts – Commended Performance; Mathematics - Commended Performance

Sweetwater Christian holds open house

Sweetwater Christian School held an open house on Sunday in their new building. Recently, Sweetwater Christian School was able to move into their new building, which was made possible through the donations of Mr. Cyrus Dale McCreight. McCreight made the donation and gave the glory to God and in recognition of his mother, who opened the first private pre-school in Sweetwater. A plaque, dedicated to Mr. Dale, will hang in the entrance of the new school. Tours of the school were given and refreshments were served at the event.

BGC’s Spirit of Christmas drives on

Brookshire Grocery Company's 29th annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive continues in approximately 150 supermarkets in 116 cities and towns throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
The stores are collecting donations of non-perishable foods and teaming up with a wide variety of service organizations, food banks and volunteers to distribute food to families who need assistance.
Last year more than 500,000 pounds of food were collected and donated to more than 16,000 families in need.
