Santa traveled a long distance in his scooter to visit the residents at Sweetwater Healthcare Center. Friends, family, staff and residents celebrated the season earlier this week and opened gifts with Santa.

With a top-notch headliner, great sponsors and wonderful donors, this year’s 41st annual West Texas Rehabilitation Center’s telethon promises to be the best yet. At seven o’clock on Saturday, Jan. 22, the popular country group Diamond Rio will step into the spotlight at REHAB 2011. Suddenlink Communications and gridSMART/AEP Texas are the official sponsors and, as they have for many years, Area-Wide Phone Books is also helping underwrite the show as a contributing sponsor. The Host Hotel for the Telethon is the MCM Elegante Suites.
First Financial Bank had their open house from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Those who attended the event enjoyed traditional gingerbread, wassail and Christmas music.

The Woodmen of the World Lodge #136 of Abilene recently donated many items to the Sunrise Villa senior citizen complex in Sweetwater as part of the Assist Our Community (AOC) project.
Kathryn and John Pendergrass of Sweetwater are members of the Abilene lodge and were the coordinators of this donation.
The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club weekly meeting last week had guest Helen Manroe, representative of Tenaska, as their program. She went into more details of what Tenaska is all about and the next steps for the project. These steps are to include finding a water resource for the plant, detailed engineering plans and to get the federal government to create a policy on what the value would be to catch carbon dioxide for a plant of this size. The Kiwanis Board also decided to donate $300 to a needy family for clothing and coats to brighten their Christmas holiday.
On Tuesday, Rep. Tom Craddick (Midland) filed House Bill 457 to amend the Charitable Raffle act to clarify that qualified organizations who host charitable raffles may promote the raffle in their E-mail newsletters and Internet websites.
December 21st
Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated their collection of “Deck the Halls and Line the Walls.” Grocery sacks filled with can food and staples for 13 needy families, along with gifts for 29 children in Christmas wrapped shoe boxes were personally delivered by congregational members during the week prior to Christmas. Standing by the Chrismon Tree with gifts and sacks are from left to right, Melvin and Nelda Walker and Doug and Jenene Taylor.
United Steel Workers #173, a local group, presented $300 to the West Texas Children's Advocacy Center for their Angel Tree project. The Angel Tree provides gifts for children who were served this year at the advocacy center. Two lives were claimed on Monday morning after an apparent murder-suicide took place in Nolan County, according to Nolan County Sheriff David Warren. The Nolan County Sheriff's Office spent the day working two scenes of a homicide and suicide connected to a domestic situation in Nolan County.
