Grass fire burns four acres

Local fire departments responded to a grass fire on County Road 419 in Fisher County on Thursday morning. According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, the fire burned about four acres of grass and seemed to be started by a power line problem. The fire is still under investigation. Three Sweetwater Fire Department trucks and three Fisher County trucks were dispatched to the fire. "We overloaded the scene with resources because of the high winds and dry conditions. Under normal conditions, we wold not have called so many trucks, but there was nothing normal about today's conditions.

Texas Theatre celebrates 75th anniversary

Seventy-five years ago the Sweetwater Texas Theatre opened its doors for showings of first-run movies and live entertainment. Two years ago people from all around the area started pitching in and working hard to clean, renovate and restore the venue to operable condition. Last week the final connections were made to get the new heating and air conditioning units installed and working in the Texas 2.

Sierra Club warns of Tenaska’s water usage

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, the Sierra Club held a noon-time press conference in Abilene on the steps of City Hall.
A report was released by the Sierra Club entitled, "What Would You Drink if the Well Ran Dry? — Nolan County Water and the Proposed Tenaska Coal-Fired Power Plant". Dr. Lauren Ross from Glenrose Engineering, Inc. presented the report alongside Dr. Jeff Haseltine and Whitney Root, Abilenians Against Tenaska; Jimmy Headstream, Multi-County Coalition; and Peter Wilson, Sierra Club.

More low-income children in the Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) will have food on weekends during this school year, thanks to a generous donation from Tenaska, developer of the Trailblazer Energy Center, a $3.5 billion carbon capturing power plant proposed near Sweetwater.
Tenaska is donating $2,000 to expand the Sweetwater Backpack Buddies program, a non-profit volunteer agency that provides food to children identified as chronically hungry by the SISD staff and administration, announced Leah Andrews, the program’s Sweetwater coordinator.

Santa Claus is coming to town

Kamdyn Dane drops off a letter to Santa at the Sweetwater Reporter. Letters are due at the Sweetwater Reporter by Friday, Dec. 10, to make it in time to be mailed to the North Pole. The letters will be included in the special “Letters to Santa” section on Friday, Dec. 24.

Bahlman Cleaners launches sixth Coats for Kids

Since 2004, Bahlman Cleaners has collected approximately 1,200 gently worn winter garments for men, women and children who otherwise would be without one, according to owner Janice Pridemore. Bahlman's mission is simple: anyone in the region in need of a coats shall receive one in possible.

Grand Jury indicts twelve

Twelve people were indicted during Grand Jury proceedings on Tuesday in Nolan County. Eight of the indictments were sealed.
Calandra Antionette Brown was indicted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony. According to court papers, Brown did knowingly threaten Ocie Lee Jennings with imminent bodily injury by swinging at Jennings with a tire iron and did use or exhibit the deadly weapon during the commission of the assault on Oct. 25, 2010.

Church choirs combine for performance

This Christmas season will offer an opportunity for Sweetwater area residents as the combined choirs of First Baptist Church and Trinity Baptist Church will present performances of the musical work Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi. The concerts will feature the choirs under the direction of Music Ministers Jonathan Jones and Joshua Wright of First Baptist and Trinity Baptist respectively. They will be joined by an orchestra from Abilene as well as soloists Joy-Renee Blackstock and Camille Skye, both Sopranos of Abilene.

Local author has book signing

Stan Johnson was present on Monday at the County-City Library for a book signing of his new book, "'Y RECKON?". The book is a continuation of stories about farm, weather, cattle and horses, people he knows and country living in general. As the front of the book says, "If you think you recognize some of these people or places, you probably do." He also had available other book he's authored including "J'Ever Notice" and "'Zat Right?". Johnson is shown above speaking with Olga Sutjipto about his books.
