It's been known as "a day which will live in infamy," and the attack on the U.S Naval base on Pearl Harbor, located on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, on Dec. 7, marks an anniversary that most Americans will remember for years to come.
Sweetwaterâs 2010 Christ-mas parade themed âItâs a Wonderful Lifeâ filled the streets with area residents enjoying holiday floats, bike riders and many others along Broadway. The parade ended at the Texas Theatre where Santa Clause was available for photos. Families were also invited to visit the train display inside the theatre.
The children at Sweetwater Christian School are getting ready for their annual Christmas program and silent auction fundraiser. It will be held at First United Methodist Church located on the corner of 4th and Cedar streets. Starting at 5:45 p.m., the bidding on the silent auction will begin, with the program following at 6:30 p.m.
Nolan County firefighters extinguished a large grass fire that burned close to 800 acres near the Highland school on Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters say they began battling the flames around noon Sunday, and had the blaze contained by about 3:30 p.m. The fire began at a travel trailer close to FM 608. A total of eight agencies responded to the fire with a total of 15 trucks and 35 people assisting with the blaze, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.
380 toys were donated and $474.17 was raised at the Sweetwater Goodfellows annual toy drive on Saturday held at Wal-Mart. Shown are Norma DeLaO and Roger DeLaCruz donating toys at the drive. Those donating received free hot dogs and hot chocolate. There are still opportunities to donate to the Sweetwater Goodfellows, as they are still taking donations of new, unwrapped toys, non-perishable food items and monetary donations. Distribution will take place from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, at Lamar Street Baptist Church. The annual Christmas party will follow from 3:45-4:45 p.m. on that day.
A press event from the Sierra Club will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010 at noon CST. It will be held at the west entrance steps to the Abilene City Hall at 555 Walnut Street in Abilene.
The theme for this year's Christmas parade is "It's a Wonderful Life." The theme derives from the beloved Christmas classic film produced by Frank Capra and starring James Stewart. The story focuses on an ordinary man named George Bailey who is contemplating suicide on Christmas Eve due to extremely difficult financial problems. His depressed state bring about the intervention of his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched and the contributions he has made to his community.
Sweetwater Goodfellows work hard every year to provide toys and food for people in Nolan County that need assistance during the Christmas season.Â For those who would like to help, donation boxes for toys and food are located at KXOX, First Financial Bank, Nolan County Courthouse, Higginbotham (Radio Shack), Sweetwater TA Travel Center, Sweetwater Reporter, Oak Street Salon, SLJ Embroidery and Gifts, Texas State Technical College, County-City Library and all Sweetwater schools. The Texas Theatre will once again host the second annual Tinsel and Trains Christmas celebration. Immediately following the city parade and Christmas tree lighting, the Texas Theatre will open itâs doors for pictures with Santa Clause. There will also be a large model train layout for viewing. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club will once again be sponsoring Star Search for Sweetwater schools. Each school in Sweetwater holds an individual contest at their school and a certain number of acts are picked for the Star Search final competition in January. Proceeds from the Star Search finals go towards awards for the A's R Us program at the end of each school year. This year's Star Search schedule is as follows:
