Jeff Lay, right, sign technician in the Nolan County maintenance section, is presented a Certificate of Service by Lauren Garduño, P.E. Lay, a 15-year employee with the Texas Department of Transportation, was honored for his longevity during a recent supervisors meeting in Abilene. In addition to the framed certificate, he received a 15-year service pin and an ice chest, his gift of choice. Garduño is the Abilene District Engineer.

Chamber sponsoring lighting contest, Christmas parade

Christmas is a special time and many people show their pride by lighting their yards and homes. The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce wants to reward the best of the best.
The Chamber will be sponsoring the annual residential lighting contest for the Sweetwater and Roscoe communities. A group of judges will drive around town Dec. 12-14, to judge all homes entered in the contest with Christmas decorations and lights on display.

Woman’s Forum selling spree tickets

The Woman's Forum is sponsoring a $500 cash Christmas shopping spree raffle. Tickets are $1 each and may be purchased from any Woman's Forum member, by calling 235-8756 or at the Sweetwater Elks Lodge Annual Christmas Craft Show at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The event is open to the public starting Saturday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. and running until 6 p.m., and on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The drawing for the prize will take place on Sunday, Dec. 4, on the last day of the Christmas Crafts Show, at 1 p.m.

Warren to seek re-election as Sheriff

David Warren will seek another term as Sheriff of Nolan County. Sheriff Warren was elected in 2008 and took office as Nolan County Sheriff on Jan. 1, 2009. Warren has served as Sheriff for the past three years and will run for re-election in 2012. “The current Sheriff’s Office is one that is centered on service and based upon integrity and professionalism. My staff and I would appreciate the continued opportunity to work hard for the citizens of this county and see that it stays that way.” stated Warren.

Angel Tree dedicated to Amy Rainey

The West Texas Children's Advocacy Center has once again partnered with Wal-Mart to provide a way for many children in the area to have a better Christmas. This year's tree is called Amy's Angel Tree, in honor of Amy Rainey, a victim of domestic abuse. Amy first brought the idea of an Angel Tree to the WTCAC eight years ago. She knew the value of giving during the holiday season.

Local girl to participate in Miss Teen of Texas Pageant

Sara "Abigail" Lynch, daughter of Ralph and Kelly Lynch of Sweetwater, Texas, has been selected as a candidate in the 2011 Miss Teen of Texas Scholarship and Recognition Pageant to be held at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel in San Antonio, Nov. 25-27.
The winner of the pageant competition will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship and a $500 U.S. Savings Bond. The new State Titleholder will also be eligible to compete for the National Title of Miss Teen of America and vie for additional scholarships, awards and prizes.

Black Friday in Sweetwater

Black Friday crowds gathered early in Sweetwater with people looking for great deals during the holiday season. Above, shoppers sit in an isle at Sweetwater’s Wal-Mart waiting for the midnight sale of laptop computers. Some brought their own chairs to wait for the great deals at local stores. Radio Shack, Sears and Bealls also opened early on Black Friday.

100 years of flight in Sweetwater

On a clear November day in 1911 the news of Robert Fowler’s approach in the Cole Flyer preceded him causing great excitement in the small West Texas town of Sweetwater. In fact, a holiday had been declared for the occasion and schools were even closed so everyone could witness the incredible landing of an airplane in an open field about a mile south of town.
