We all know the feeling of an emotional flight hangover. The end of a pilot’s indulgence week! The shortest, fastest week of the year is the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. And 51 of the longest, slowest weeks need to pass before we can do it again. We all slip away by plane, car, trailer or motorcycle…we were suitably subdued, packed and waiting for our trip back to the ordinary.
Sweetwater High School has recently been notified that it has become a certified AVID school after two years of implementation. To be a certified AVID school the school must meet criteria in 11 essential areas, such as tutoring, rigorous courses, site team participation and strategies in writing, reading, inquiry and collaboration. The Sweetwater High School program has grown from 30 students in the ninth and tenth grades to 65 students this year in grades 9-12.
Residents, family members and staff members enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, Nov.17, 2011, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab. Shown below is Janice Boil with Integracare Hospice serving desserts.
Mustang Moms are reviving their "Adopt-A-Mustang" program for the varsity basketball boys and girls. The program is designed to let students from kindergarten through sixth grade "adopt" a high school athlete. Students have the chance to adopt a Mustang varsity basketball player (girl or boy) on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 at the home game for both teams. Registration is still $25, and students will get a t-shirt and button with their adoptees name and picture. And because the varsity players are in such high demand, students can adopt the same Mustang if they want.
AVONDALE BAPTIST CHURCH
Greetings from the Avondale Baptist Church family! Our regular Sunday schedule is: coffee fellowship at 9:20 a.m., Bible study at 9:45 a.m., worship services at 10:50 a.m. and 6 p.m., choir practice at 7 p.m. On Wednesday evening we have On-Mission groups for all ages at 7 p.m. We will have "High Attendance Day" for Sunday school on Sunday, Nov. 27. Broadway Baptist Church
November 18th
A meeting of fire chiefs, representing the volunteer fire departments in Nolan County, was hosted at the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office this past Tuesday evening. Sheriff David Warren presented the five volunteer fire departments with a total of 33 new Kenwood brand portable hand-held radios with accessories. Sheriff Warren has administered the grant funds, received by Nolan County, from the State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) grant for the past several years. “These new portable radios represent a major advancement in technology for the area volunteer fire responders.” said Sheriff Warren.
Trinity Baptist Church here in Sweetwater observed Clergy Appreciation Month on October 30, with gifts for Bro. Ward Hayes (pastor), Bro. Kyle Tubbs (Youth Minister) and Gretchen Jones (Education Minister). A video was made by the members of the church for Bro. Ward. Among the questions answered were, “What comes to mind when you think of Bro. Ward?" "What do you appreciate the most about Bro. Ward?" and “How does the church feel about Bro. Ward?” Gifts were presented following the video.
Trinity is located at the corner of Hailey and Santa Fe Streets.
Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Dennis Cumbie urges producers who want to purchase coverage through the Noninsurable Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) to do so before the sales closing date of Dec. 1, 2011.
NAP provides financial assistance to producers of noninsurable crops when low yields/grazing loss, loss of inventory or prevented planting occur due to normal disasters.
The following crops have a NAP application closing date of Dec. 1, 2011: grazing and forage/hay on native and improved grass, honey, potatoes, radishes, grapes and caneberries.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 37 calls for service, issued three citations and made three arrests on Nov. 16, 2011.
The SPD received 19, 911 calls.
Arrested by SPD:
• Danny Johnson, 58 — Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
• Shinice Black, 23 — Warrant.
• Dalton Dunnagan, 24 — Warrant.
The Nolan County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served three civil papers and made two arrests from Nov. 15-16, 2011.
Arrested by NCSO:
• Brenda Sue New, 47, of Fort Worth — Warrant/evading arrest detention.
November 17th
The Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting at Villa Palma Italian Restaurant, located at 120 W. Broadway, on Thursday, Nov. 10. Owner Ardian Halili is shown cutting the red ribbon with Chamber Ambassadors and community members.
Also, Schlotzsky’s in Sweetwater celebrated their 15 year anniversary and re-imaging with a ribbon cutting on Tuesday, Nov. 15. Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors and community members attended as well.
