November 15th
The fifth day of the trial against Aubrey Phillip Childers continued on Monday, November 14, 2011. Mr. Childers is on trial from an allegation and indictment of a male-on-male sexual assault that occurred on or around August 15, 2010 around the southwest part of Sweetwater.
The nine-woman, three-man jury heard a slew of testimony from the defense throughout the entire day, including testimony from Mr. Childers himself, leading up to the time when the defense rested their case around 4:20 p.m.

November is American Diabetes Month, and to acknowledge this Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 8 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose and answer any questions you may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.
The health department will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25 for the Thanksgiving holidays. Immunization clinic is cancelled for Wednesday, Nov. 23. Regular hours for immunizations will resume on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Since 2004, Bahlman Cleaners has collected over 1,000 gently worn winter garments for men, women and children who otherwise would be without one, according to owner Janice Pridemore. Bahlman's mission is simple: anyone in the region in need of a coats shall receive one in possible.
When Bahlman's first started the drive in 2004, it brought in 300-350 coats. Bahlman Cleaners' Coats for Kids continues to grow each year, but this year donations are lower than usual. However, the cleaners are seeking help from more and more community partners and hope that the results will be impressive.
Highland’s Junior High Crowning for 2011 was held on Oct. 27, 2011. Matthew Leyba, son of Lelo and Mary Ann Leyba, was crowned Highland’s Junior High Football Hero. He is in the eighth grade. Kelsi Johns, daughter of Jimmy and Mitzie Johns, was crowned Highland’s Junior High Football Sweetheart. She is in the eighth grade. The crown bearers were Blake Bankhead, son of Bryan and Jennifer Bankhead and Kinley Hoelscher, daughter of Allen and Sha Hoelscher. Both are in Highland’s pre-k class.

A contractor for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will refresh pavement markings on roadways in 11 counties within the Abilene District over the next few months.
More than 200 miles of pavement will receive new markings under the contract. The reflectivity of pavement markings diminishes over time due to wear and tear from traffic, sunlight and weather conditions, said Roy Wright, P.E., Transportation Operations Director for TxDOT’s Abilene District.
