Sweetwater’s historic Municipal Auditorium will host a live Broadway musical on Saturday evening, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. when “Godspell” takes the stage.
“Godspell” is a production of Abilene High School’s drama department and choir, and is directed by Clay Freeman. Freeman was Sweetwater High School’s drama director in the 1970s and took Sweetwater students to second place in state theater competition in 1973.
The 2011 Sweetwater Jaycees Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship Pageant contestants met on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at Texas State Technical College for a tea and learned the ins and outs of the pageant. The annual pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. This year, the Jaycees will have $2,500 in scholarship money available to the winners. A total of $1,250 will be awarded to Miss Snake Charmer while $600 will be presented to the first runner-up. The second runner-up will receive $400 and the talent competition winner will receive $250.
The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA), a department of ACT, Inc., recognized Sweetwater Independent School District for having three schools in their district make the 2010 NCEA Higher Performing Schools List. The following schools received the honor and Higher Performing (HP) recognition in the following areas:
• Southeast Elementary School, Math and Reading - Higher Performing in all areas;
• Sweetwater Intermediate School, Math and Reading;
• Sweetwater Middle School, Social Studies.
Texas Alumni Football is coming to the Abilene area in April. Former high school players from Sweetwater and other neighboring schools are expected to put on the pads again with former teammates to comprise up to 12 alumni teams. The games are open to all alumni and the ages of the players will likely range from nineteen to mid-forties. Alumni teams will play an alumni team from their rival school.
