Municipal Auditorium to host ‘Godspell’

Sweetwater’s historic Municipal Auditorium will host a live Broadway musical on Saturday evening, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. when “Godspell” takes the stage. “Godspell” is a production of Abilene High School’s drama department and choir, and is directed by Clay Freeman. Freeman was Sweetwater High School’s drama director in the 1970s and took Sweetwater students to second place in state theater competition in 1973. This is the only tour stop for the Abilene High School show, brought to Sweetwater because of Freeman’s long-time connections to Sweetwater.

Three arrested on sealed indictments

On Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 16, 2011, Nolan County Sheriff’s Deputies served two of the 10 sealed indictments handed down by the grand jury on Tuesday. They were assisted by local Texas DPS Troopers.
Deputies went to 114 1/2 Fisher Street in Sweetwater and arrested three subjects.
• Jerry Dewitt Washington Jr., age 25 – charged with possession of a controlled substance (Penalty Group 1 – namely cocaine), a State Jail Felony. His bond was set at $5,000.

Nolan Nursing residents move to new facility

Nolan Nursing and Rehab residents were moved to their new facility on the east end of Sweetwater by the Texas Department of Transportation office from their Lamar Street location.

Fisher County fire being monitored

The fire that burned in South Fisher County on Monday and Tuesday continued to be monitored on Wednesday and control is expected by Friday evening, according to The State of Texas State Operations Center (SOC). Roby, Rotan, Hamlin, Lake Sweetwater, Nolan, Roscoe Volunteer Fire Departments, Sweetwater, Snyder Fire Departments, Fisher County Road and Bridge Department, Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol and Texas Forest Service responded to the fire. Grand Jury indicts 17

The Nolan County Grand Jury handed down 17 indictments on Tuesday with 10 of those indictments sealed. Five of those indictments stemmed from a crack cocaine distribution house being busted in Sweetwater on Oct. 6, 2010.

Fire burns 1500 acres while Texas wildfire conditions worsen

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — With much of the state covered in parched, brown grass and brush, Texas Forest Service is warning residents who live along and west of the I-35 corridor to be prepared for dangerous wildfires this week.
Weather conditions are expected to worsen on Wednesday and Thursday as a low pressure system moves over a dry line hovering over the Western Plains. Wind speeds are expected to pick up and relative humidity levels are expected to drop — two key ingredients for dangerous fire weather.

Snakes at the Capitol!

Members of the Sweetwater Jaycees took nine rattlesnakes to show off at the Capitol Wednesday and Thursday to promote the Sweetwater Jaycees World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up which will be held March 11-13, in Sweetwater. The Jaycees visited with Representative Susan King and Governor Rick Perry and promoted rattlesnake safety and awareness. County to replace security equipment

The Nolan County Commissioners' Court met for its regular meeting on Monday morning, Feb. 14 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Various approvals were made at the meeting regarding equipment, including replacing the current Guardian courthouse security equipment with a new system from Centurion Wireless security systems.

Fire consumes 400 acres

February 15, 2011

A large grass fire in Fisher County burned about 400 acres on Monday afternoon according to authorities. Smoke filled the air in Sweetwater, due to yesterday's high winds. No residences were lost, but a number of barns and horse pens were lost due to the flames burning the tall, dry grass. Authorities say that there were two separate fires burning in the area and the cause of the fires in unknown.
