Cumbie brings award from Fort Worth Livestock Show

The 2011 Junior Swine Show was held on February 3-4, at the Fort Worth Livestock Show and Rodeo. The Reserve Champion Yorkshire Swine this year was exhibited by Blake Cumbie with Sweetwater, FFA. Blake is an eighth grader at Sweetwater Middle School. He is shown with his father, Dennis Cumbie.

Veterans Counseling available locally

It's a comfort to know that help is available for those that need it.
The Taylor County Vet Center is branching out and offering counseling services to veterans in the Sweetwater community. Since December, a counselor has been making weekly visits to Sweetwater each Thursday to serve veterans in a local capacity.

Sweetwater gets more HD TV channels

Suddenlink Communications has launched more new high-definition (HD) TV channels in Abilene, Snyder and Sweetwater. 
New channels include: Fuse HD, Independent Film Channel HD, We TV HD, Biography Channel HD, Disney XD HD, History Channel International HD, The Science Channel HD, Fox Business Network HD, Fox Soccer Channel HD, Oxygen HD, HBO Comedy HD, HBO2 HD and Starz Comedy HD. In addition, a number of new digital channels in standard definition have been added, including: MTV Jams, VH1 Soul, Nick 2 and Starz Comedy.

Farm Service Agency announces general sign up period for CRP

Dennis Cumbie , Executive Director for the Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA), announced a Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup March 14, 2011 through April 15, 2011. This is the second consecutive year that USDA has offered a general CRP signup.

Reeves Family welcomed at Highland Heights UMC

Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently welcomed the Reeves Family, who were commissioned as missionaries in 2001 serving with The Mission Society in Trujillo, Peru. Rev. Martin is a graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary and also an ordained pastor in the New Mexico Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church where he served as a senior pastor for seven years. The Reeves' vision is to make disciples of Jesus Christ; inviting children, youth and adults into a personal relationship with Christ, discipling them in their faith, and empowering them to be disciple makers.

Rotary Club discusses youth exchange program

Several guests were on hand at the Sweetwater Rotary Club meeting held on Monday, Feb. 28 at the Texas State Technical College banquet room. The meeting held a double purpose in raising funds for the End Polio campaign spearheaded by Rotary International and highlighting the Rotary Youth Exchange program with a Powerpoint presentation from Jack Campbell.

SHS graduate inducted into Tester’s Hall of Fame

FORT HOOD, TX--The United States Army Operational Test Command inducted long-time director Wayland Smith into the Testers’ Hall of Fame during a ceremony celebrating the 17th year of the program recently at west Fort Hood.
Smith, a 1959 graduate of Sweetwater High School, is the son of Stella M. Smith, formerly of Sweetwater, and the late Cleave A. Smith. He is a 1966 graduate of Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a 1968 graduate of Texas A&M University with a master’s degree in industrial engineering.

Gasoline prices make biggest one week increase since Hurricane Katrina

Motorists in Texas are paying on average $3.30 for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline, a 22 cents hike in one week which represents the biggest one-week increase since September, 2005. Nationally prices also jumped 20 cents to $3.43 a gallon according to AAA Texas.
Between Aug. 31 to Sept. 5, 2005, the days before and after Hurricane Katrina slammed into New Orleans, prices in Texas increased 40 cents in one week. Nationally during that same period, the average price for gasoline increased 35 cents.
