Temporary injunction denied

April 6, 2011

Around 5 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, April 5, 32nd District Court Judge Glen Harrison denied the request for a temporary injunction of residents from Oak Creek Reservoir and Lake Sweetwater to stop the City of Sweetwater's implementation of the new lease agreement.
A packed courtroom of residents — with even some hallway overflow — attended the nearly three-and-a-half hour hearing held at the Nolan County Courthouse. Leading the cause was Clarence Brockett, Jr., an attorney from Midland who also is a recent lake property owner.

Goodwill supports West Texas veterans

In 2010 Goodwill Industries was awarded their first grant funding for veteran's assistance. Other funding for veterans’ assistance is supported by proceeds from the sale of $2 Veterans Cash scratch-off lottery tickets. This in itself has helped many veterans in so many ways.
Goodwill Industries of West Texas helps support veterans from young to old. Those who have served our country now have support that was well past due.

City Harmonic to perform at EFC

Emmanuel Fellowship Church is excited to host one of Christian music’s hottest new bands, The City Harmonic, in Sweetwater on Sunday, April 10, for three dynamic performances. With their new song “Manifesto” rocking the airwaves and continued exposure to Christian media outlets around the country, their presence in Sweetwater will prove to be an amazing morning of worship and an unforgettable evening concert.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 36 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on April 4, 2011.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 400 block of NE Georgia.

Calls for service:
• Theft and debit/credit card abuse — 100 block of NW Georgia.
• Burglary — 900 block of E. Louisiana.
• Information only — 900 block of E. 16th.

Arrested by SPD:
• Male juvenile, 16 — Possession of marijuana.
• Jordan Houston, 18 — Disorderly conduct.

Family loses home to fire

April 5, 2011

A Sweetwater family lost their home and all of their belongings in an early morning fire on Tuesday, April 5, 2011. According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, it is believed that the fire began near a furnace around 5:45 a.m. at 2109 Chester Street. There were no smoke detectors in the house. According to Madden, the mother of the home just happened to wake up and smell smoke. She immediately got one child out and ran through smoke to get her second child to safety. They all made it out okay, but they lost all of the belongings and their home.

Library Tag Day tomorrow

Marjorie Wilks and Billie Carmichael, Woman's Forum members have been helping the County-City Library by helping with the Library Tag Day campaign for at least a combined total of 24 years. Marjorie will again be at the Texas National Bank selling Library Tags like she has for the past 12 years. Woman's Forum members will be at Texas National Bank, First Financial Bank, Roscoe State Bank, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, the Post Office and some members will be selling tags in the downtown area from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Library Tags are sold for any amount of donation.

WTCAC to host Chamber Coffee

The West Texas Children's Advocacy Center will host the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce coffee event at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at the building located at 317 Oak Street. The Children’s Advocacy Center provides the first step in the healing process for children and their families, said spokesperson Teresa Zarate.
Last year, a total of 513 children from Nolan, Fisher, Mitchell, Scurry and Borden counties received services from the center, with 169 of those children from Nolan County.

Roadshow comes to Sweetwater

If you have gold, silver, antiques or other rare collectibles lying around your house, the Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow wants to see them!
The Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow is making a stop in Sweetwater this week in search of rare and unique collectibles. The company states that “Collectors have set aside $300,000 to be distributed to local residents for their items during the free five day event.

Roscoe woman dies after ATV accident

April 4, 2011

A Nolan County woman has died from injuries she received in an ATV accident in Runnels County.
Anna Mueller, 50, of Roscoe was killed when the four-wheeler she was driving apparently went out of control going down a hill. Investigators said she suffered critical head injuries.
Runnels County Sheriff Bill Baird said Mueller was taken by ambulance to Rolling Plains Hospital in Sweetwater but was dead on arrival.
