Local airman receives awards

May 28, 2011

Senior Airman Janell Lopez, daughter of Joanna and Mark Wofford of Sweetwater, flew in the fighter plane belonging to U.S. Forces Garrison Command 643rd Regional Support Group, Kandahar, Afghanistan. She is a Certified Taser Instructor and was awarded Airman of the Month during her Kandahar, Afghanistan deployment. She also received the CLS (Combat Lifesaver) Certified Most Outstanding Instructor Award for Security Forces and the Tuskegee Airman award while deployed in Iraq. She was awarded the Elizabeth N. Jacobson Award. She was hand selected of 170 students, Coined for Excellence by Col.

What's the Rumble at East Ridge?

The courtyard at East Ridge Elementary is blooming with recent renovations. After the portable buildings were removed from the area between the two classroom wings, the courtyard was left with dirt and a bit of grass. The PTO decided to use proceeds from the students' fall fundraising efforts to make the courtyard a more useable and inviting space.

RPMH receives grant for improved medication management

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) received a grant from the Texas Hospital Insurance Exchange (THIE) in the amount of $5,000 to implement medication management/reconciliation software that will help enhance the process for medication reconciliation at the time of patient discharge.
Administration and management of medications to patients is one of the most important tasks of any healthcare provider. The hospital is looking forward to leveraging the latest technology in patient medication management to help improve the process thanks to the recent grant.

Strong gathering at county meeting

An atypically strong gathering was in attendance at the Nolan County Commissioners' Court meeting on Monday morning, May 23 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
A group of concerned residents joined local Patricia Parker in discussing a concern with truck traffic on Forrest Drive, urging county officials to step into the matter as the road is not wide or safe enough for the trucks.

SISD retirees honored

The Sweetwater Independent School District hosted a retirement reception on Wednesday afternoon to honor those who have served the community and students through education and are retiring after this school year. The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 56 calls for service, issued 11 citations and made no arrests on May 25, 2011.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 500 block of Locust.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served seven civil papers and made one arrest on May 25, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Mark Henry Williams, 28 of Sweetwater — Warrant/assault family/house member with previous conviction.
• Lareshia Shana Carey, 20 of Abilene — Warrant/theft by check and Mitchell County warrant/theft by check.

SEED group at Windpower 2011

Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development executives and board members recently attended the AWEA Windpower 2011 festival in Anaheim, Calif. Shown at the SEED booth are (from left to right) Kyle Lawrence, SEED Board President; Gail Lawrence, TSTC West Texas President; Kirstin Smith, SEED Marketing/Administrative Director; Ken Becker, SEED Executive Director; and Jacque McCoy, Sweetwater Chamber Executive Vice President. There are approximately 1200 vendors and 20,000 attendees attending the event. Several Sweetwater/Nolan County based wind companies also displayed at the conference.

HHUMC donates to Samaritan Hospitality House

Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated a collection of items for the Samaritan Hospitality House located in Colorado City. It ministers to families who are visiting loved ones incarcerated in local prisons. With a homelike atmosphere, the “house” provides weekend lodging for family members during their stay free of charge. Congregational members are pictured above with the consecrated articles that filled the altar. Standing at back row from left to right are Andrea Beall, Jo Whitfield, Betty Bryant and John Meadows.

Five inducted into Highland High School NHS

Five students from Highland High School were inducted into membership of the National Honor Society in a traditional candle light ceremony held on May 12.
Members were selected by a Faculty Council for meeting the high standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character.
Students inducted were Josh Andrews, Haley Hill, Kara Hughey, Jessica McCain and Nabil Sutjipto.
