The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 170 calls for service, issued one citation and made 16 arrests from April 29 through May 1, 2011.

The SPD received 103, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 600 block of Silas.
• 1500 block of Sam Houston.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 600 block of Bowie.
• Burglary of a building — 100 block of Oak.
• Family violence assault with previous conviction — 800 block of Neff.
• Criminal mischief — 900 block of E. 15th.
• Burglary — 400 block of Walnut.

Arrested by SPD:
• Jessie Deboard, 25 — Warrant.

US kills Osama bin Laden decade after 9/11 attacks

WASHINGTON (AP) — Osama bin Laden, the face of global terrorism and architect of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, was killed in a firefight with elite American forces Monday, then quickly buried at sea in a stunning finale to a furtive decade on the run.
Long believed to be hiding in caves, bin Laden was tracked down in a costly, custom-built hideout not far from a Pakistani military academy.

Good evening. Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women and children. It was nearly ten years ago that a bright September day was darkened by the worst attack on the American people in our history. The images of 9/11 are seared into our national memory.

Chamber to honor volunteers

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will hold a special volunteer coffee event at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, at the Pioneer Museum.
"If you have volunteered for anything involving the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce in the past year, come on by and enjoy the event," said Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Jacque McCoy. "The Pioneer Museum will be the host for the special coffee, but this coffee is not only for chamber members, but for chamber volunteers."

Freedom skater rolls through Sweetwater

What would you do to inspire today’s youth? Would you skate across America? Well that’s what Austin Szelkowski, the Freedom Skater, is doing. He started just across Liberty Island, home of the Statue of Liberty, on October 4, 2010 and plans to travel across the United States to Santa Monica, California by mid-June. If you were one of the lucky residents of Sweetwater, you saw him skate down Broadway about 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
