The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 49 calls for service, issued five citations and made two arrests on June 15, 2011.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 1400 block of E. Broadway.
• Family violence assault — 1300 block of James.

Arrested by SPD:
• Arthur John, 41 — Warrants.
• Jesus Rodriguez, 27 — Driving while license invalid.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served three civil papers and made four arrests on June 15, 2011.

BNSF special rolls through town

June 16, 2011

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway began operating the 2011 BNSF Special in Emporia, Kan., Friday, June 3, 2011, beginning a three-week, 7,000-mile journey through portions of Kansas, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado, visiting 11 cities along the route. The passenger train stopped in Sweetwater on Tuesday, June 14.
“The BNSF Special is a great way to share the excitement of the railroad with these special passengers and to say thank you to our employees, their families, and the communities we serve”

Immunization Fun Day set for June 22

The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E.12th, will have their annual immunization fun day event on Wednesday, June 22 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. This is a normal day for immunization clinic but they have set this day to emphasis the importance of making sure children’s immunizations are up-to-date. They plan to make it a special day for the children; each child receiving immunizations will receive a balloon, stickers and more. Also, parents will have a chance to win a $50 gas card.

City dam upkeep begins

The City Commissioners met for a regular meeting on Tuesday morning, June 14, 2011 at City Hall.
The minutes from the monthly meeting held on May 17 and the Budget Retreat on May 12 were both approved, as well as the Mid-Year Agreed Upon Procedures report presented by Certified Public Accountant Cathrine Wilks. The report covered the fiscal period which ended on March 31 of this year, and out of six areas, all were reported as good with no exceptions.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 600 block of W. 6th.
• Information only — 200 block of E. Ave. B.
• Unattended death — Lakewood Drive.
Arrested by SPD:
• Elva Lopez-Soto, 46 — Warrants.
• Jerry Meeks, 49 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served four civil papers and made no arrests on June 14, 2011.

• Close patrol — CR 234.

Roscoe approves fireworks show

The Roscoe City Council voted unanimously to approve a permit for having a fireworks show July 2. Roscoe City Manager Cody Thompson said they will consult with the fire department before they make the decision to go forward with the fireworks display as the date draws nearer, but said it was best to plan as if they will be able to have the show in case conditions improve.
Thompson pointed out that it has rained during the last two July 4th celebrations, causing the City of Roscoe to either cancel or cut their show in half.

SEED to join in workforce project

June 15, 2011

The Sweetwater Enter-prise for Economic Devel-opment (SEED) Board of Directors met for their regular meeting on Monday morning, June 13, 2011 at the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
Action items approved at the meeting were the minutes from the May meeting and the payment of accounts payable. The financial statements from April 2011 were approved as well, with reports of various payments and projects in good standing.

Over a thousand acres burned

June 15, 2011

According Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, 1,116 acres were burned in a fire near Lake Trammell over the weekend. According to Nolan County Sheriff David Warren, the fire began on County Road 145 and was caused by a burning deer carcass. Ralph Lynch received a citation for the illegal burning during a burn ban. The Nolan County Commissioners recently passed an ordinance banning the sale or use of fireworks in the county.

• Danorris Smith, 20 — Disorderly conduct/fighting.
• Kenneth Acorn, 21 — Disorderly conduct/fighting.
• Shyvina Slaton, 17 — Public intoxication.

Man cited for illegal burning

According to the Texas Forest Service, right at 500 acres were burned in a fire near Lake Trammell over the weekend. According to Nolan County Sheriff David Warren, the fire began on County Road 145 and was caused by a burning deer carcass. Ralph Lynch received a citation for the illegal burning during a burn ban.
