Nolan County's money is already hard at work.Â
The Nolan County United Way has distributed their first allocation for the year. This year there are nine agencies receiving funds: The American Red Cross, Gateway Family Services, SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program), Back Pack Buddies, WTCAC (West Texas Child Advocacy Center), Cancer Services Network, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and Women's Resource Center.Â

Itâ€™s a one-two punch to the competition from TXU Energy and its work with smartphones. Today, the company announced the launch of the TXU Energy Mobile App for the iPhoneÂ®. With this release, TXU Energy becomes the first and only electricity retailer in Texas to offer its customers mobile access to their accounts through an app for the iPhone, iPadÂ®, and iPod touchÂ®. Itâ€™s also the latest innovation in the companyâ€™s ongoing efforts to connect customers across the state with online and mobile solutions to support the ways they use and manage electricity.
In Texas the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline dropped five cents according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. The national average also dropped five cents. This is the fourth week in a row gasoline prices have dropped and the average cost of gasoline in Texas is 31 cents less than it was a month ago.
The statewide average is $3.58 and the national average is $3.73.Â The Texas statewide average is 15 cents below the national average.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued four citations and made two arrests on June 8, 2011.

The Sweetwater Reporter welcomed special visitors from Mrs. Jenna Hayesâ€™ fifth grade class at Sweetwater Intermediate School. The class received a tour of the building on their last week of school and learned about what it takes to get a newspaper out daily.
Kevin Pantoja, son of Felix and Aida Pantoja and a student at Highland Middle School in the Highland Independent School District, has been selected to travel to the Houston/Galveston area as a participant in Education in Action's Lone Star Leadership Academy, July 11-15, 2011. Kevin's selection for the Academy was based on his outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, a recommendation by his counselor, Rebecca Rees, and his involvement in school and community activities.
The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Nolan County Soil and Water Conservation District invite the public and any agencies with an interest in conservation issues to participate in a local work group meeting to be held at the Maryneal Community Center in Maryneal, Texas. This meeting will be on June 13, 2011 at 10:30 a.m.Â
The purpose of this meeting is to receive input from a broad range of local agencies, organizations, businesses and individuals that have an interest in natural resource conditions and needs in Nolan County.
