Sweetwater High rated Academically Unacceptable

July 30, 2011

The Texas Education Agency released school accountability ratings for 2011.
Highland School received the highest rating in Nolan County, receiving an Exemplary rating. Blackwell School received an Academically Acceptable rating and Roscoe Collegiate High School received a Recognized rating. Roscoe Elementary was Academically Acceptable and Hobbs Alternative Education Co-op received an AEA (Alternative Education Accountability) Academically Acceptable rating.

Scrapping breeds new kind of criminal activity

The theft of scrap metal has become a fast growing crime in Sweetwater according to Sweetwater Chief of Police Jim Kelley. Metals such as brass, copper, aluminum, nickel and stainless steel are being sought after by thieves looking to make money by selling it to recyclers. Items that are stolen have included gutters, window units, fence posts, gate doors, old appliances and junk cars.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 80 calls for service, issued eight citations and made four arrests on July 28, 2011.

The SPD received 32, 911 calls.

Accidents:

• Sex offender's duty to register lifetime — Sweetwater.
• Theft — Sweetwater area.
• Assault — 900 block of Pine.
• Burglary of a vehicle/theft of firearm — 2400 block of Lamar.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 200 block of E. Arizona.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 200 block of SE Georgia.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 2100 block of E. Broadway.

A tribute to WASP Ann Griffin Gleszer

Ann Griffin Gleszer was born to Frank and Catherine Golick of Columbia, Connecticut on  June 21, 1916. She graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Master’s Degree in Education. While attending college, she also took flying lessons and got her private pilot’s license, eventually becoming an air traffic controller at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

Drought impacts on Texas reservoirs mounting

ATHENS—Following the drought of record of the 1950s, Texas built dozens of reservoirs designed to maintain an adequate water supply should another drought of equal severity occur.
That time has come, and the coming months will reveal if those reservoirs are equal to the task.
The outcome is anything but certain. As shown by the thunderstorms that swept across extreme North Texas in early summer and boosted water levels in lakes around Dallas-Fort Worth, one exceptional rain event can go far toward relieving an exceptional drought, at least in the short term.

Coin collectors host local event

Currently on a global tour, the International Coin Collectors Association (ICCA) made a stop in Sweetwater at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel, located at 300 SE Georgia Ave. Buyers will be in town until Saturday, July 30. The show hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The ICCA has been purchasing coins, paper currency, gold and silver on behalf of their global network of collectors, dealers and refineries. This special event is free and open to the public. Gas prices increase

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $3.62, a penny more than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
The national average is $3.71. The statewide average price is nine cents less than the national average. Texans will find the least expensive average price for gasoline in the state is in El Paso at $3.52.  Dallas and Ft. Worth are reporting the most expensive averages in the state at $3.66 for a gallon of regular unleaded. The current gas price in Sweetwater is $3.65.

FSA county committee nomination deadline is Aug. 1

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, reminds farmers, ranchers and landowners to nominate farmer and rancher candidates to serve on their local FSA county committee by the Monday, Aug. 1, 2011 deadline.
Elected county committee members serve a three-year term and are responsible for making decisions on FSA disaster, conservation, commodity, and price support programs, as well as other important federal farm program issues.

• Suspicious vehicle — CR 105.
