The Sweetwater Elks Lodge will be celebrating in a big way this October. The local lodge will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Sweetwater Elks Lodge #1257 was recently presented with a plaque from the Grand Lodge Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks congratulating the local lodge for a century of dedicated service to the community and dedication to living the cardinal principals of charity, justice and brotherly love and in particular for carrying on the programs of Elkdom with fidelity.
Lamar Street Baptist Church will be holding a revival starting on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 through Wednesday, Sept. 14.
Evangelist Tom McCollister will speak at each service, and special guest Jerry Lewis will lead worship and provide special music.
The revival will begin on Sunday morning, Sept. 11 during the regular morning worship service, starting at 10:40 a.m. The evening services will be held each night, Sunday through Wednesday, at 7 p.m.
The seventh annual Sammy Baugh Classic made its return to Mustang Bowl on Thursday, with the first game of the weekend featuring Roscoe and Hawley. The Classic will continue tonight with Sweetwater against Vernon at 7:30 p.m. Rotan and Ranger will be squaring off the final day, also at 7:30 p.m. at Mustang Bowl. Shown, team captains for the Roscoe Plowboys and the Hawley Bearcats meet midfield on Thursday evening.
Sweetwater resident and Tejano music artist Anjelique has advanced to the Top 5 in her nomination for Best New Female Artist at the 31st Annual Tejano Music Awards.
As a result of her achievement, Anjelique will now be in attendance at the music awards show slated for Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 in San Antonio at the San Antonio Event Center with the hope of taking the honor home.
Hoyt Mulanax of Sweetwater is this monthâ€™s Artist of the Month and has many of his watercolor and acrylic paintings displayed at the County-City Library in Sweetwater. His drawings started with a line and a dot â€” an airplane at age 4 â€” and has progressed well beyond that. In early August of this year Hoyt started doing caricatures of celebrities in ball point pen and those are also on display. All of the paintings on display are for sale.
Texas motorists may notice some changes to speed limit signs in the next several months, as new laws regulating speed limits on the roadways of the state highway system begin to take effect.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 58 calls for service, issued 12 citations and made one arrest on Aug. 31, 2011.
The SPD received 23, 911 calls.

The SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees met for a special-called meeting on Tuesday evening, Aug. 30, 2011 at the Administration Building.
The brief meeting took place to offer a public hearing regarding the 2011-2012 budget, though no one was in attendance to offer input.
