Firefighter Appreciation Dinner

A Firefighter's Appreciation Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex starting at 6:00 p.m. It will be sponsored by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
The event will serve two purposes: to honor all area firefighters for their tireless efforts during this extreme wildfire season and to raise funds for the groups as well.

Sweetwater Heart Walk 2011

It's time to lace up those running shoes for a good cause--the 2011 Sweetwater Heart Walk.
The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 8 at the Sweetwater Mustang track field. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the walk starting at 9 a.m. Participants can walk on the track or a route on the streets will be mapped out.
The local Heart Walk, a fundraising initiative which supports the American Heart Association (AHA), has been taking place for over 20 years. Usually held in the spring, event coordinator Jerrie Gee stated that this year's walk was moved to the fall.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued two citations and made four arrests on Sept. 29, 2011.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

• Michael Smith, 30 — Warrant.
• Lauren Pardue, 19 — Warrant.
• Dolores Amaya, 23 — Warrant.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served seven civil papers and made one arrest on Sept. 29, 2011.

Grant Partnership between TSTC and the Texas Theatre

The new digital signs on the Texas Theatre marquee wouldn't have been possible without a local grant.
The Title 5 Grant partners two local colleges: Western Texas College (WTC) in Snyder and the four TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas campuses. WTC is responsible for developing general education courses online; TSTC develops the program from a technological aspect.

Texas Forts Trail Board Elects Directors

ABILENE, Texas – The Texas Forts Trail Board of Directors recently elected officers for the 2011-12 year and elected five new directors.  Christine Perkins, director of the Comanche Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, was re-elected president.  Jacque McCoy, executive director of the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce, was re-elected vice president.  Steve Waller of Albany was re-elected treasurer.  Waller is Senior Vice President of First Financial Bank Albany and Moran.

42nd Annual German Sausage Festival

42 years has a domino effect of German sausage making in Slaton, Texas. On Sunday, October 16, 2011, the annual St. Joseph's German Sausage Festival will be held at St. Joseph's Hall. Dinner will be served from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The main menu consists of German sausage, grilled chicken, homemade German potato salad, green beans, cranberry sauce, cakes and breads. Take-out plates will be available at the south side of St. Joseph's Hall.

Distinguished Staff Achievement at Angelo State University

The Angelo State University Alumni Association will recognize distinguished alumni, honorary alumni and outstanding faculty and staff during its annual Homecoming Dinner on Friday, Oct. 14, in the LeGrand Alumni Visitors Center, 1620 University Ave.
Sweetwater native Adelina Castro Morales is this year's honoree for Distinguished Staff Achievement, selected for her outstanding service and longstanding dedication to Angelo State University. She is the daughter of Joe and Frances Castro of Sweetwater. Morales and her husband, Alfred, have two sons, David and Adrian, both graduates of ASU.
