The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 36 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on Dec. 28, 2011.

The SPD received 23, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 100 block of Bluebonnet.
• 500 block of E. Broadway.

Arrested by SPD:
• Samuel Crespin, 42 — Accident involving damage.
• Naomi Kidd, 28 — Warrants.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 12 calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on Dec. 28, 2011.

Arrested by DPS:
• Toni Lorraine Cruz, 20, of Abilene — Possession of marijuana and driving while intoxicated.

Christmas fire victim identified

The family of Sergio Leonel Rivera has now been identified by Sweetwater authorities about his death in a Christmas morning fire on the 200 block of Lewis Front Street in Sweetwater.
The 41-year-old man died early Christmas morning in a fire in his Sweetwater home.
According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, firefighters received a call about smoke coming from the house just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011. "People saw smoke coming from the house and called 9-1-1."

Truck wrecks into Brookshire’s

Around 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, a GMC Sierra four-door pick up truck wrecked into the emergency door in the front of the building at Brookshire's Grocery Store. According to authorities, the driver of the vehicle accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake when parking. Both front airbags were deployed and the driver sustained an injury to her right hand. Several police officers and ambulance personnel responded to the scene with Pickrell Wrecker Services also responding to tow the truck. A chip of brick wall came off of the store front and two bread racks belonging to Mrs.

Positive reports at RPMH meeting

The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for their final regular meeting of 2011 on Tuesday evening, Dec. 27 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The board approved several purchases in the meeting, including chairs for the Med/Surg patient rooms and visitor chairs. The chairs currently in place have been around for over 35 years.
43 patient chairs and 43 visitor chairs will now be purchased at the prices totaling around $25,000 and $29,000, respectively, which is under the budgeted price.

Important new requirements for agricultural and timber tax exemptions

Big Country Electric Cooperative would like to make its members aware that beginning January 1, 2012, Texans wanting to claim an exemption from Texas sales and use taxes on electricity and other items used in agricultural and timber operations must provide a registration number to the supplier on Texas Agriculture Sales and Use Tax Exemption Certification Form 01-924.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

Accidents:

Calls for service:
• Accident involving damage — 1300 block of Kiowa.
• Credit/debit card abuse — 100 block of E. Third.

Arrested by SPD:
• Jacinto Rosas, Sr., 42 — Public intoxication.
• Patrick Hutson, 32 — Public intoxication.
• Roosevelt Hutson, 52 — Public intoxication.

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital held their Christmas activities on Dec. 21, and several awards were presented at that time.
Heartbeat of the Year winners were Plant Operations. Shown are Howard Bryant, Ronny Ashley, Steve Clark, Julian Garza and Chuck Browning.

NCSO to receive mobile radio

December 28, 2011

The Nolan County Commissioners met for their final regular meeting of 2011 on Tuesday morning, Dec. 27 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
The commissioners approved the purchase of one mobile radio for the Sheriff's Office. Nolan County Sheriff David Warren noted that the majority of the purchase will be paid off by the Homeland Security grant from 2010, which will finish off the grant.

Halford named EOY

December 28, 2011

The 2011 Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Employee of the Year is Keri Halford. The announcement was made at the RPMH Christmas awards ceremony.
Halford was presented her plaque and monetary award by Rosa Best, CNO. Halford was described as dedicated and professional and one who goes above and beyond in her job duties. Best praised her for numerous compliments from co-workers and patients.

One pet available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has one pet available for adoption.
The pet available for adoption this week is a male husky mix puppy, about one year old.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
