Goodfellows to have sign-ups

The Goodfellows will have their sign-ups for Nolan County from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, Thursday, Nov. 1 and Friday, Nov. 2, at the Sweetwater Fire Station, located at 900 E. Broadway.
Applicants need to bring their latest proof of income, approval notice for food stamps, birth certificate for each child, pay stub and approval notice for TANF.

Lions Club sponsoring poster contest

The International Lions Club is sponsoring a Peace Poster Contest for young people — ages 11, 12 and 13 years old. This is a competition with the winner chosen from anywhere around the world. More than 350,000 children participate annually. This year's theme is "Imagine Peace".

BACA teaches about stranger danger

Members of the local BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) chapter recently visited Southeast Elementary School to talk to Kindergarten and first grade students about stranger danger.
Javier “Chewey” Franco (shown speaking) taught students about talking to strangers, friendly strangers and what to look out for when they are alone. The group also went over Halloween safety tips.

Gynecology Exams: More than cancer screening

New guidelines published recently by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists urges women 21 and older to have pelvic exams on an annual basis. This announcement comes just months after several groups, including the American Cancer Society said most women need a Pap smear only once every three years.
With the conflicting information, some women are confused about how often they should see their gynecologist. Many women think they should only see an OB/GYN physician for a Pap smear, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

RSB awards $50 at pep rally

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 137 calls for service, issued 16 citations and made 13 arrests from Oct. 12-15, 2012.

The SPD received 70, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Sexual assault of a child — Sweetwater area.
• Theft — 1600 block of Roberts.
• Theft — 1500 block of Mulberry.

• Public intoxication — 200 block of E. New Mexico.
• Public intoxication x3 — 500 block of E. Third.
• Failure to ID — 500 block of E. Fourth.
