The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 119 calls for service, issued five citations and made seven arrests from Oct. 26-28, 2012.

The SPD received 41, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1000 block of W. 6th.
• Theft — 100 block of S. Hopkins.

Arrested by SPD:
• Raul Garcia, 57 — Warrant.
• Jim Creek, 29 — Evading/driving while intoxicated.
• Einesio Rivera, 49 — Driving while intoxicated.
• Marilyn Johnson, 31 — Warrant.
• Breanna Havner, 19 — Warrant.

Local West Nile concerns continue

A concerned local business owner hopes to inform the public about a scary situation. Leslie Brazelton, owner of Les' Barber Shop, shared with the Sweetwater Reporter in a phone interview that she recently tested positive as having the West Nile virus.
Though she is not certain, Brazelton thinks she may have been bitten by a virus-carrying mosquito while outside mowing the lawn at her house located between Sweetwater and Trent.

Breast cancer luncheon celebrates local survivors

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) kicked cancer to the curb to celebrate survival stories and successes at their annual Breast Cancer Survivors' Luncheon on Friday, October 26 at the hospital classroom. This year's theme was "Give Cancer the Boot".
Following a welcome from RPMH administrator Donna Boatright and an invocation from Dr. Robert Eaker, guests enjoyed a pink-themed meal prepared by the hospital's dietary staff.

Employee's mega-production clears out overdue cases

"Timelier work is one of the foundation blocks of Texas' reinvented human services eligibility system, and workers like Sammy Alvarez have had a lot to do with the improvement we've seen over the past few years," said Alvarez's award nominator.
According to his nominator, Alvarez recently provided outstanding customer service when he helped completed 437 overdue cases in the Houston area with the Health and Human Service Commission.

Kiwanis pancake supper helps projects and people

Who knew that the idea of "breakfast for supper" would one day prove to be a successful local fundraiser to help area programs and children?
Apparently, the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club did.

The local civic group is once again gearing up for their annual Pancake Supper on Friday night, November 2, 2012 at the Sweetwater High School cafeteria. The fundraiser will be held before the final home game--Senior Night, when the Sweetwater Mustangs take on the Monahans Loboes at the Mustang Bowl.

Highland fifth graders host PTO appreciation party

The Highland fifth grade class surprised members of the Highland PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) with a cookie party Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 23, 2012, in the school cafeteria. Fifth grade student Jigar Patel came up with the idea for students to show their appreciation to the PTO for all they do for them. With some guidance from the principal, he and his classmates organized the party where all of the elementary students were invited. Jigar read a speech expressing his appreciation while other fifth grade students gave reasons why they were thankful for the PTO.

SMS team participates in BEST robotics competition

The Boosting Engineering Science and Technology (BEST) Robotics competition took place Saturday, Oct. 20, at Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater. This year’s theme was Outer Space, which sparked tons of creative robots. A record 13 area schools participated in the Big Country BEST Competition hosted by Texas State Technical College West Texas this year. Winners of the Oct. 20, competition will move on to regionals.

Calls for service:
• Indecency with a child — 1200 block of Ragland.
Arrested by SPD:
• Marcos Rodriguez, 17 — Disruption of classroom.
• Hubert Hubbard, 47 — Possession of marijuana.
• John Watkins, 43 — Failure to ID fugitive.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had four calls for service, served two civil papers and made one arrest on Oct. 25, 2012.
