KXOX to have eighth annual Veterans Day Shout-Out Show

KXOX Radio in Sweetwater will host its eighth annual Veterans Day Shout-Out from 1-4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012. The show will include interviews with singer Barbara Mandrell and star of the Hart of Dixie series Claudia Lee. You can also hear shout-outs from many others.

RPMH Diabetic Outreach Program to offer blood sugar checks

November is American Diabetes Month, and to acknowledge this Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, Nov. 29, from 8:30 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose and answer any questions you may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.

Lawrences celebrate 50 years of Thanksgiving service

On Sunday, November 18, a half-century of service will be celebrated as the 50th anniversary of the Lawrence Family Thanksgiving Dinner will be held at the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) fellowship hall, located at 309 Cedar Street in Sweetwater.
Starting at 11:30 a.m., a full Thanksgiving meal-- "with all of the trimmings and none of the cleanup"--will be served and continue until 1 p.m. Providing this year's decorations at the event will be church member Karan Bergstrom.

Veterans Day celebrates the sacrifices of servicemen, women

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, going all the way back over a century ago, the first semblance of a Veterans Day celebration took place. And as we celebrate veterans on the holiday in 2012, Americans recall and express their gratitude for the sacrifices made by past and present veterans as they served their country.
In 1918, an armistice--which could also be called a truce--put an end to World War I, which was known at that time as The Great War. The next year, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the day as "Armistice Day".

Recording studio owner becomes high school hall of famer

A local resident recently headed back to his old stomping grounds to receive a top honor from his high school.
Mark Hicks, owner of Trent Studios in Sweetwater, was inducted into the ninth class of the Weatherford High School Hall of Fame. The celebration was held on the first weekend of October 2012, as Hicks was one of three other athletes and a track team to be inducted.

TSTC to host Remembrance Day national roll call event

Texas State Technical College West Texas will host a Remembrance Day National Roll Call event from noon to 1:15 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, 2012, at the Sweetwater Campus Student Center. All are invited to attend. There will be appearances by the Dyess Air Force Base Honor Guard and the Sweetwater High School Pops Sensations.
Guest speakers include the Honorable Tim Fambrough, Nolan County Judge and Robert McBride, Nolan County Veteran Services Officer

Nolan County program to focus on oil/gas leasing

Oil and gas leasing will be the topic of discussion during a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service meeting set for 6 p.m. Nov. 19, on the third floor of the Nolan County Courthouse in Sweetwater.
“Heightened activity in the ‘oil patch’ here is the chief topic of a lot of conversations these days,” said Zach Wilcox, AgriLife Extension agent in Nolan County.

Allsup’s coming to Sweetwater

Everyone benefits from TSTC Health Fair

The 2012 Nolan County Health Fair was in full-swing on Thursday, November 8 at the TSTC (Texas State Technical College) Fitness Center, located on the Sweetwater campus.
Vendors from Sweetwater, Nolan County and the surrounding areas were able to present their booths to attendees, who could visit their stations to learn about various companies and programs while walking away with free items as well.
Among those with booths was the TSTC Nursing Department. Their booth was primarily directed to Alzheimer's awareness, with informative sheets that cite warning signs of the disease.
