In an effort to motivate Sweetwater High School students to apply themselves and earn high grades, Texas National Bank has established an award they call â€śGood Grades Pay.â€ť The concept is simple, make the A Honor Roll for a six week period and have your name entered into a drawing to win $50. The pool of names is separated by grade so that one A Honor Roll student from each grade will win $50 for a total give away of $200 every six weeks.
Sweetwater City Manager Eddie Brown gave his report during the December meeting of the City Commission, outlining a variety of issues and upcoming projects.
Due in part to available capital improvement funds, planning is underway for work to be done at the Sweetwater Police Station. A contract was recently signed by the city with Wiginton Hooker Jeffry Architects, P.C.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 159 calls for service, issued 22 citations and made eight arrests from Dec. 14-16, 2012.
The SPD received 71, 911 calls.

Unseasonably warm weather is in the area for Tuesday, as it will be sunny with a high near 74. Winds will be from the west-southwest at 10 to 15 mph.

Members of the Nolan County Foundation are encouraging non-profit organizations who need financial assistance in select projects to contact the NCF for challenge grants. According to Jerry Riggs, President of the NCF, the Board recently met to discuss on-going projects and to see out other identified projects that could qualify for funding. Two recent challenge grants of $5,000 each were awarded to the Girl Scouts of America, Camp Boothe Oaks and the SNAP program.
Christmas is a special time and many people show their pride by lighting their yards and homes. The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce wants to reward the best of the best.
The Chamber will be sponsoring the annual residential lighting contest for the Sweetwater and Roscoe communities. A group of judges will drive around town Dec. 17-19, to judge all homes entered in the contest with Christmas decorations and lights on display.
Eljen Technology in Sweetwater is beginning to make a real mark on the world of radiation detection with its advances in plastic scintillation material. The company, a subsidiary of Ludlum Measurements, was recently recognized as a collaborator on a project that was named one of the R&D 100 for 2012.
The R&D 100 Awards is a list of the top 100 research and development projects named annually by the R&D Magazine, a research and development publication that serves research scientists, engineers, and technical staff members at laboratories worldwide.
The Sweetwater City Commission began looking at bids toward the construction of the new SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building at their meeting on Tuesday, December 11 at City Hall.
Seven bids were received on the project, with the companies hailing from Sweetwater, Abilene, Lubbock, Big Spring and Waco. A brief summary of the cost along with the deductions for other work were read aloud.
