Several teams helped in the First Annual Sweetwater Trash Pickers event held Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012. The teams cleaned up Alabama Street from the Interstate 20 exit to Newman Street. About 45 people showed up to the event and picked up everything from golf balls, dirty diapers, tools, beer bottles, Styrofoam cups and straws, Lotto tickets and much more.
"It was amazing how much ground we covered in two hours," said event organizer Russ Petty. "It was great to see how many people care about our little corner of the world."
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has five dogs available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a female terrier mix. Also available are a female collie mix, a male chihuahua and a male collie mix.
According to Sweetwater's animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
