Adopt a Mustang for softball program underway

The "Adopt-A-Mustang" program is back again. Lady Mustang Softball players have decided to take part in the program starting Thursday, Feb. 23, for the Varsity tournament. The program is designed to let students from kindergarten through sixth grade "adopt" a high school athlete. Students have the chance to adopt a Lady Mustang varsity softball player. Registration is still $25, and students will get a t-shirt and button with their adoptees name and picture. And because the varsity players are in such high demand, students can adopt the same Lady Mustang if they want.

Award winning historian to speak on Saturday

At 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, the Friends of the Library will present award-winning Texas historian Bill O’Neal, who will speak about his book, The Johnson-Sims Feud: Romeo and Juliet, West Texas Style.

APD Bomb Squad robot destroys package

February 22, 2012

A tense situation was diffused in front of the Sweetwater Post Office after an Abilene Police Department bomb squad robot destroyed a suspicious package this afternoon.
Officials in Sweetwater were reportedly on heightened awareness following the presence of several protesters outside the Nolan County Courthouse yesterday and its close proximity to the post office.
The package reportedly contained a cellphone.
There were no injuries.

Man receives probation for indecency with a child

Jesus Cecilio Villa pled guilty to indecency with a child by contact, a second degree felony, during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012.

FFB donates furniture to local churches

Along with their recent renovation, First Financial Bank in Sweetwater updated the furniture in their offices. Their older furniture was donated to several local churches. Shown loading furniture for their church, Highland Heights United Methodist Church, are Melvin Walker, Rusty Allen and Doug Taylor.

City suspends rate increase requested by Atmos Energy

The rescheduled City Commission meeting took place on Tuesday morning, Feb. 21, 2012 at City Hall.
The resolution recognizing the contributions of the Ludlum family to the economic life of Sweetwater along with the 50th anniversary of Ludlum Measurements was approved, following the reading of the resolution last Tuesday, Feb. 14 by Commissioner Jerod Peek.

SEED director educates legislators on importance of PTC extension

Ken Becker, Executive Director for SEED, recently traveled to Washington DC in conjunction with the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) and their “Wind Power on Capitol Hill 2012”. This is an effort to educate the legislators on the importance of passing the Production Tax Credit (PTC) extension. "We were looking for a minimum one year extension that would be tied to the Payroll Tax Bill," said Becker. "The current PTC will expire on Dec. 31, 2012. The importance of the PTC extension is vital in keeping the emerging renewable energy markets expanding, investing, and hiring employees."

The SPD received 14, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 36 calls for service, served one civil paper and made four arrests from Feb. 17-20, 2012.

Several protest at courthouse

Several family members and friends of an alleged sexual assault victim held signs and protested at the Nolan County Courthouse on Tuesday morning, Feb. 21, 2012.
One sign read, "My name is Fonda Balthrop. My daughter was sexually abused. There was no justice. Still to this day I sit and watch her suffer. All I wanted was Justice! It hurts me to see the pain in her eyes when she asked, 'Mommy why don't the POLICE HELP ME?'"
