Changes made to Round-Up to alleviate traffic, make a safer event

This weekend the Sweetwater Jaycees World’s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up will be back in full force. The biggest event that West Texas and the world knows doesn’t come together without preparation. Meetings about the Rattlesnake Round-Up took place nearing the event to discuss parking, tours and other aspects that need to be addressed.

DECA students attend state competition conference

Sweetwater High School's DECA, a competitive business and marketing organization, chapter recently attended the state competition conference in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Two teams, consisting of four students, have advanced to the international competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. ICDC, (International Career Development Conference), invites qualifying students from all 50 states, several American territories, and a number of Canadian territories to attend the conference to compete, attend leadership conferences and earn scholarships.

Jazz Ambassadors to perform free concert in Sweetwater

The internationally acclaimed U.S. Army Jazz Ambassadors of Washington, D.C., will continue its long history of presenting free public performances when it appears at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium on Monday night, April 2, 2012 at 7 p.m. The Jazz Ambassadors’ concert in Sweetwater is sponsored by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.

SPFA raising money for wild land gear

The Sweetwater Professional Firefighters Association (SPFA) is selling t-shirts to raise money for the purchase of wild land gear for Sweetwater firefighters in the event of more wildfires. Last year, the White Hat Fire in southern Nolan County burned more than 80,000 acres. The equipment the SPFA is looking into purchasing will help immensely if there is a repeat of last summer.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 37 calls for service, issued seven citations and made no arrests on March 5, 2012.

The SPD received 21, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 400 block of Alexander.
• Assault — 1200 block of Ragland.
• Theft — 200 block of Lamar.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served two civil papers and made no arrests on March 5, 2012.

Calls for service:
• Attempt to locate — I-20.
• Inmate transport/dental — E. 15th Street.
• Illegal dumping — FM 1170.
