Musicians sought for local event

Area artists Brandon Bohall and Joah Henry have teamed up to bring Sweetwater a musical event for Memorial Day weekend.
On Saturday night, May 26, a concert will be held at the Nolan County Plaza parking lot. This is the first time for the acts to perform in Sweetwater.
Right now, any and all local singers, songwriters, artists and bands are encouraged to participate. They are also looking for any motorcycle and classic car clubs and other similar groups to join them for the event.

Local Loan and Pawn celebrates 40 years

A local business is celebrating 40 years of service.
Local Loan and Pawn Shop — home of the "upside-down" sign — opened its doors to the community on May 15, 1972. The founder, Bill Haley, began his pawn shop experience several years earlier in 1954 through 1955.
By the time Haley opened Local Loan, he was the only pawn shop available in Sweetwater, setting up shop at 211 Lamar. In all, the building was entirely 600 feet.

Commissioners discuss jail

Steps were made toward the Nolan County Courthouse remediation and the county's jail and office complex during the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, May 14, 2012 at the Courthouse.
Seven record proposals were submitted following the county's request for proposals for a construction manager at risk for the dual project. The proposals were opened by County Attorney Lisa Peterson and officially received by the commissioners during the meeting.

RPMH raises bone health awareness with lunch and learn seminar

One in two women and one in eight men over the age of 50 will have complications as a result of osteoporosis. During the month of May, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is participating in Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month by hosting a Lunch and Learn seminar on May 21, that will discuss bone disease.
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, more than 10 million American women and men suffer from the effects of osteoporosis. In addition, 34 million more are estimated to have low bone mass, leading to increased risk of the disease.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 118 calls for service, issued nine citations and made five arrests from May 11-13, 2012.

The SPD received 56, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1100 block of Ash Street.
• Theft — 1400 block of Grand.
• Theft — 1400 block of E. 12th.
• Information only — 1800 block of Lamar.

Arrested by SPD:
• Isaiah Garcia, 27 — Assault.
• Cresencia Garcia, 33 — Assault.
• Johnny Gonzales, 29 — Warrants.
• Erika Gonzales, 30 — Warrants.
• Nicholas Austermann, 25 — Criminal mischief.
