Free athletic physicals offered

Free athletic physicals will be given Saturday, May 19 at the Sweetwater High School athletic fieldhouse. Times for the physicals will be 8-9:30 a.m. for incoming seventh and ninth grade boys and girls, and 9:30-11 a.m. for incoming 11th graders and boys and girls with major injuries. Student athletes who are entering the seventh, ninth or 11th grade must receive a new physical for that year.

Early voting began Tuesday

Nolan County Clerk Pat McGowan wants to remind Republican voters in Nolan, Blackwell, Maryneal and Roscoe that they will be able to cast their ballot in their respective cities on Election Day instead of traveling to Sweetwater to vote.
"The Republican Precincts that are affected will be precincts 1-5; 7&9; 10-12 and 14," said McGowan.
Furthermore, Republicans and Democrats will now be voting at the same polling places. Voters from both parties should check the precinct number on their voter registration card and go to their respective polling place locations on the 29th.

NCF to award scholarships

Thirty Nolan County high school and home schooled spring graduates will be honored by the awarding of $1,000 scholarships at a reception hosted by the Nolan County Foundation at the Sweetwater Country Club beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, according to Jerry Riggs, NCF President.
Riggs continued that with these new awardees, the NCF has awarded 163 scholarships since the NCF Golf Classic began eight years ago. Proceeds from the golf scramble held each spring are dedicated to awarding Nolan County spring graduates $1,000 each to be applied at any Texas college.

The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

Musicians sought for local event

Area artists Brandon Bohall and Joah Henry have teamed up to bring Sweetwater a musical event for Memorial Day weekend.
On Saturday night, May 26, a concert will be held at the Nolan County Plaza parking lot. This is the first time for the acts to perform in Sweetwater.
Right now, any and all local singers, songwriters, artists and bands are encouraged to participate. They are also looking for any motorcycle and classic car clubs and other similar groups to join them for the event.

Local Loan and Pawn celebrates 40 years

A local business is celebrating 40 years of service.
Local Loan and Pawn Shop — home of the "upside-down" sign — opened its doors to the community on May 15, 1972. The founder, Bill Haley, began his pawn shop experience several years earlier in 1954 through 1955.
By the time Haley opened Local Loan, he was the only pawn shop available in Sweetwater, setting up shop at 211 Lamar. In all, the building was entirely 600 feet.

Commissioners discuss jail

Steps were made toward the Nolan County Courthouse remediation and the county's jail and office complex during the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting on Monday morning, May 14, 2012 at the Courthouse.
Seven record proposals were submitted following the county's request for proposals for a construction manager at risk for the dual project. The proposals were opened by County Attorney Lisa Peterson and officially received by the commissioners during the meeting.

RPMH raises bone health awareness with lunch and learn seminar

One in two women and one in eight men over the age of 50 will have complications as a result of osteoporosis. During the month of May, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is participating in Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month by hosting a Lunch and Learn seminar on May 21, that will discuss bone disease.
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, more than 10 million American women and men suffer from the effects of osteoporosis. In addition, 34 million more are estimated to have low bone mass, leading to increased risk of the disease.

Man jumps from bridge

On Saturday, May 12, 2012, at approximately 10:28 p.m. officers of the Sweetwater Police Department were dispatched to the 1900 block of Lamar Street in Sweetwater in reference to a male subject who appeared to have jumped off of the bridge that serves as an overpass to Interstate 20 crossing Lamar Street. The top of the bridge is approximately 20 feet above the ground.
The male was identified as a hispanic resident of Sweetwater and it appeared that he suffered a broken left arm. Sweetwater EMS arrived on the scene and the patient was flown to an area hospital via helicopter.
