Texans paying average of $3.20 for gas as July 4th holiday approaches

This week as Texans prepare to travel during the 4th of July holiday, families are paying about $45 to fill-up a 14-gallon tank which is the size of a typical family vehicle. This is about $4 less than what 4th of July travelers were paying at this time last year for the same tank. The average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.20, which is eight cents less than last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 39 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on June 27, 2012.

The SPD received 41, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Assault— 400 block of Bowie.
• Theft— 900 block of James.
• Aggravated family violence assault — 900 block of W. Arizona.
• Theft— 1400 block of Ragland.

Arrested by SPD:
• Jason Ortega, 25 — Warrant.
• Christopher Martinez, 25 — Evading arrest/detention.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served two civil papers and made one arrest on June 27, 2012.

USDA Farm Service Agency reminds producers to report crop losses

Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, reminds producers to report crop losses resulting from a weather-related disaster event within 15 days of the disaster or when the loss first becomes apparent, this includes crops covered by crop insurance, the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) and crops without insurance coverage.

Many attend drama camp at SHS

Many local students in grades second through eighth are currently attending a drama camp at Sweetwater High School, led by Sweetwater High School drama students and SHS drama teacher Melody Copeland. A show of Copeland's adaptation of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012, at the SHS Auditorium.

Nearly three million Texans will travel for 4th of July

AAA Texas projects 2.98 million Texans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Independence Day holiday weekend, a 4.7 percent increase over last year.  The Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as Tuesday, July 3 to Sunday, July 8.

New TxDOT map provides real-time traffic conditions

Austin—The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched a new online map application, Drive Texas™, that provides travelers with real-time traffic conditions, traffic and weather feeds, as well as links to other useful travel information.

Spouses of deployed Dyess AFB personnel treated to culinary class from TSTC’s Chef Coby

Texas State Technical College West Texas will host a special culinary class on Friday, June 29, for spouses of deployed Dyess Air Force Base personnel.
The four-course gourmet meal includes blue cheese stuffed-bacon wrapped bosc pears, butternut squash soup, roasted chicken with wild mushroom duxelles and polenta and fall fruit parfait. Each of the participants will work alongside Chef Coby to create the meal.

Hearing determines Angel's placement

A final placement hearing took place on Tuesday afternoon, June 26, 2012 in Nolan County with Judge David Hall presiding, for Angel Flores, the toddler who was abandoned on Interstate 20 in Nolan County last year.

Encompass Home Health hosting fan drive

Encompass Home Health is hosting a fan drive. They will be giving away box fans free to the public this Friday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Encompass Home Health office located at 1008 Lamar Street.
Encompass Home Health staff identified a need for this service while making home visits in and around the area. They noted that many of the elderly did not have air-conditioning or simply would not run their air-conditioner because of high utility costs. While this won’t cool an entire home, it will help keep cooler air circulating, decreasing the risk of overheating and dehydration.
