A town hall meeting took place on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, in Abilene set up by the Comptroller’s office. Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, was the presenter. The meeting was designed to keep the financial issues of the state of Texas in front of the public as Texas prepares to go into the next legislative session. The rainy day fund, set up by the legislature, currently has approximately $6.3 billion in the account. It is projected to reach $7.3 billion by August 31, 2013.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 59 calls for service, issued no citations and made one arrest on June 25, 2012.
The SPD received 35, 911 calls.

Brookshire Grocery Co. has announced Red Diamond Sweet Peach Tea is now available in half-gallon and pint sizes at all Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
Also, Red Diamond will be available in the half-gallon size in Sweet, Unsweet and Sugar Free beginning June 29.
“Flavored teas have become very popular, and we’re excited about adding Red Diamond Peach Tea to our lineup—just in time for summer,” said BGC Manufacturing Vice President Mike Giles. “The tea is fresh brewed right here at our plant in Tyler.”
The Veterans Readjustment Counseling Services are the community-based professionals within the VA who welcome home the war veteran by providing top-quality compassionate readjustment assistance to the veteran and their family in order to facilitate a successful return to civilian life within their community.
They offer individual, group, marital and family counseling to Combat Veterans of all wars and their families. Counseling is also available to any Veteran who experienced any form of sexual harassment or sexual assault while serving in the military.
Nolan County Commissioners accepted a petition Monday following the commissioners’ meeting, which will take county jail construction and fixing of the courthouse facade to the voters in November. Dr. Loren Bryant presented a petition of 446 signatures asking the issue to go to a bond election. This number meets the required 5% of registered voters, which equals 420 voters.
Cancer Services Network, a not-for-profit agency in Abilene, serving underserved cancer patients and their families in 19 counties in West Central Texas — including Nolan County — has announced the addition of Mendy Stogsdill, LCSW, to their staff.
Mendy began her duties as CSN social worker in November 2011. She has over 20 years of experience as a social worker in hospital and hospice settings.
Mrs. Stogsdill holds a Masters in Science of Social Work from University of Texas in Arlington. Mendy and her husband, Steve, have a daughter, Emily, 9, and a son, Alex 3.
One person was killed in a one vehicle crash occurring in Callahan County.
On Monday, June 25, at 10:10 a.m., Dr. Thomas Allan Woodward was driving his 2004 Cadillac south bound on Texas 36 in Callahan County. The vehicle traveled off of the roadway and struck a tree.
This crash occurred about 1.3 miles north of U.S. Highway 283. There were no braking or evasive action marks prior to impact with a tree on the side of the roadway.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 118 calls for service, issued nine citations and made seven arrests from June 22-24, 2012.
The SPD received 60, 911 calls.

The Abilene Prairie Dogs will host Nolan County Community Night at Walt Driggers Field on the campus of McMurry University on Tuesday, June 26. The Prairie Dogs will host the Rio Grande Valley White Wings. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the first pitch will be at 7:05 p.m.
This year, as part of the TSTC (Texas State Technical College) Women's Leadership Institute's (WLI) mission to support the TSTC Values, each TSTC location — Waco, Harlingen, Marshall and West Texas (Abilene, Brownwood, Breckenridge, Sweetwater — each did a community project on Saturday, June 23, 2012.
The Sweetwater group spoke with Russell Jones, City of Sweetwater Director of Public Works, about painting the picnic tables at Newman Park and he was thrilled with the idea. He has asked that the pillars of the pavilion be painted as well.
