For many families, the "back to school" journey is a financially trying time--especially for families with more than one child. This year, various churches are doing their part by holding school supply drives to get the school year started on a positive note for families in need.
Shorie Henderson, a member of Emmanuel Fellowship, has organized a school supply drive to benefit anyone in need from kindergarten through high school age students.
The Texas National Bank Board of Directors recently elected Mike Fernandez as Vice President. The election was announced today by Bill Johnson, President and CEO. Fernandez is expected to be involved in the bankâs financial operations as well as lending according to Johnson. Mike comes to Sweetwater from San Antonio where he served as Bank Officer / Credit Analyst for Plains Capital Bank.
On August 25, 2012, voters will have a chance to head to the polls for the Tax Ratification Election (TRE) for Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District).
Early voting on the TRE started on Wednesday, August 8 and will continue through Tuesday, August 21, 2012. Early voting hours will last from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the SISD Administration Building located at 207 Musgrove.
On the day of the SISD Tax Ratification Election--on Saturday, August 25, voters can cast their ballot at the Sweetwater Middle School, located at 305 Lamar, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Another âAll Class Reunionâ for Homecoming 2012 is planned for Saturday, Sept. 8, from 2 p.m. to midnight at the Sweetwater High School Cafeteria.
Jeff Stein of Radio KXOX will be emcee, and Big Boys BBQ will cater the supper at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. and a short program will be held at 5 p.m. After the barbecue supper, J.B. Cloud of Radio KBCY, Abilene, will serve as D.J. for the music and dance beginning at about 7:30 p.m. The D.J. will present music from the 50âs to the present.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 55 calls for service, issued two citations and made one arrest on Aug. 16, 2012.
The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 11 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Aug. 16, 2012.

NOLAN COUNTY MINISTERIAL ALLIANCE
The Nolan County Ministerial Alliance is hosting a prayer walk of our schools on Tuesday, August 21 at 7 PM. We will meet on the west lawn of the First Financial Bank and then go to the respective schools to pray for our upcoming school year. Â Please join us as we cover our administrators, teachers, students, and staff with prayer.

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has one dog available for adoption, a female chinese crested. According to Sweetwaterâs animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
At the special meeting held by the Nolan County Commissioners on Thursday morning, August 12, at the Nolan County Courthouse, discussion was held on the tax rate for 2012-2013.
The proposed total tax rate comes in at .394635 (39 cents) per $100 valuation. This number is the combination of the general fund rate of .340670 per $100 valuation and the farm to market fund rate of .053965 per $100 valuation.

After meeting with the public, Mobley and his fellow coaches were served a "heart attack" hamburger meal by local Dairy Queen owner Jerry Hulcy. The gathering was held prior to Sweetwater's opening scrimmage on Saturday at Mustang Bowl against Wichita Falls Hirschi.

A couple of public hearings took place during the Sweetwater City Commission meeting held on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at City Hall.
One of the public hearings was held in regard to the proposed budget for 2012-2013. While no input was heard from those in attendance, it was noted that this budget will raise more total property taxes than last year's budget by $320,726, or 19.74%; of that amount, $73,002.55 is tax revenue to be raised from new property added to the roll this year.
